On Jan. 24, Iona men and women’s swimming and diving celebrated their senior day.
The atmosphere around the Class of 2026 felt magical, loud, loving and full of pride from the moment the meet began. Alumni from past years packed into the stands, cheering just as fiercely as they did when they wore the Maroon and Gold themselves.
Every seat seemed filled, especially with all fourteen senior parents showing up in full force, creating a wall of support that the team could feel with every race. The energy was electric with a 15-minute ceremony for the seniors that included a short montage of their growth from babies to now adults, bagpipes, flowers and small gifts given to each of them to show how much they are appreciated. An afternoon that was high of energy from beginning to end was very unforgettable.
That attitude carried over into the competition, where Iona defeated Manhattan University.
The men’s team followed with an extremely impressive victory of 190-to-96, while the women’s team won comfortably with a score of 181-to-57. Freshman Victoria Mourdant shocked the audience by breaking the pool record in the 100 individual medley with an insane time of 57.99, making her afternoon a high point. Her performance highlighted the core of the event. In the end, the night felt like a perfect snapshot of what makes Iona swim and dive so special, and that tradition and family that only grows stronger each season.
The cheers from alumni, parents, teammates, and friends blended into one powerful voice that carried every swimmer and diver forward.
