If you were to ask me what my favorite type of professional wrestling is, I don’t know if I could give you an actual answer. I love the carnage and visual spectacle of deathmatch wrestling, but have the same feelings towards the discrete but hard-hitting action you’d see from shoot-style wrestling. I appreciate a really fast-paced match with a bunch of high-flying spots as much as I do a grounded technical affair.
One thing I’ve never liked, however, was comedy wrestling. I get that comedy is subjective, but I’ve never found any of it funny. Danhausen has always been unfunny to me, Kuroshiro TOKYO Japan is even more unfunny, and Danshoku Dieno is an affront to God. The only people that could be considered comedy wrestlers that I like are Andreza Giant Panda, who is quite literally a guy in a giant inflatable panda suit, Razor Ramon HG, who is an actual comedian outside of wrestling that had a lot of talent in the ring, Santana Jackson, a Michael Jackson impersonator who has a lot of talent in-ring, and Orange Cassidy, who is a very good in-ring wrestler.
That’s only five wrestlers out of the potential hundreds of comedy wrestlers that are out there that I actually like, and only two of them (Jackson and Andreza Giant Panda) I like due to their novelty, and only one (Andreza) solely so.
But, there’s one match that managed to convince me that comedy wrestling could be something worthwhile was a match between The Invisible Man and The Sandman from Joey Janela’s Spring Break X on Apr. 17, 2026.
Now, The Sandman isn’t a comedy guy. A former Extreme Championship Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion, Sandman is known more for his hardcore style and his tendency to use a kendo stick and drink beer during his entrance.
Over the years, Sandman has overcome substance abuse issues and has finally decided to end his career on his own terms. But, instead of ending it with a regular wrestler, Sandman decided to face The Invisible Man, and he’s quite literally what you think. The Invisible Man is just air, and wrestlers will treat the air and sell as if there’s another wrestler in the ring.
The Sandman, as well as Bill Alfonso, who is in The Invisible Man’s corner, end up treating it as if it were a regular match. The Sandman takes punches and moves like if it were a regular match and Bill Alfonso plays up the heel antics.
Then, Game Changer Wrestling Senior Referee Adam Gault gets knocked down, and the whole match breaks down, in a positive way. There’s a lot of run-ins, from Violent J to 25 different referees to Mick Foley, and all of it is so absurd that it loops around to being some of the best stuff I’ve ever seen.
The Sandman vs The Invisible Man is probably amongst one of my favorite matches of all time and one I think you should go out of your way to watch. It’s a five-star match, and will probably be in my ballot for Greatest Match Ever in 2027.
