Dorm decor: Spruce up your suite with a fall wreath

This photo shows what your finished wreath will look like!

Wreaths aren’t just for Christmastime anymore with this new take on a traditionally winter decoration. Fall is here to stay, and what better way to celebrate with some autumn-inspired crafts?

If your dorm room or apartment is feeling a bit run down, try a do-it-yourself (DIY) decoration to help spice up your space.

Sophomore Carly Rennie said how she frequently uses DIY crafts to turn an idea into an entire project.

“I love DIY crafts because when I have a small idea, I know I can find a craft to help me bring it to life,” said Rennie.

With each new idea comes a set of instructions and information of the materials need to complete the craft. While some are very specific with step-by-step written and visual instructions, others are less detailed.

Wreaths are common DIY crafts for decorating apartments or dorm rooms because of their simplicity. They are also something that can be modified for almost any holiday.

With a quick online search you can find a variety of different ways to create a festive wreath. The materials and colors may vary by season, but the steps will stay the same.

Sophomore Anastasia Giannakakos is another regular DIY crafter, and is often searching for new crafts with every new season or holiday.

“I love everything to do with fall,” said Giannakakos. “My favorite craft is making autumn wreaths. I feel that it’s something different and you can get really creative with all the materials.”

Materials:

-Twig Wreath

-Fake leaves or flowers cut off from their original stems to make attachment easier.

-Wooden numbers

-Ribbon or paint

-Glue

All of these should be available at your local craft store.

Step 1: Cut the leaves off from the stems.

Step 2: Place the leaves or flowers in between the twigs of the wreath in a random pattern, making sure to stick to one side of the wreath, because you will be using the other side later on. The placement of these leaves and flowers does not need to be precise.

Step 3: Take your wooden numbers and wrap a thin piece of ribbon around it, covering the entirety of the numbers. Or if you don’t want to use ribbon, you can use paint instead, covering the numbers in whichever design you would like.

Step 4: Once the numbers are completed, glue them to the wreath on the opposite side of where you put the leaves.

Step 5: Display your craft on your door with a 3M Command Strip hook.

These steps can also be modified to add or remove whichever items you prefer. Some other suggestions for creating a fall look are drawing and cutting out your own leaves.
