Spring style update: Easy ways to mix and match patterns and prints with style

Mixing and matching isn’t just for bathing suits anymore; as spring approaches, switch up your style with these combinations. The key to working these looks is pairing busy patterns with other patterns that are more toned down.

Stripes:

There are a lot of different ways to wear stripes.

One look to try is pairing it with polka dots. This way you aren’t focusing on two bold things, and instead one compliments the other. If you’re going to do this, try to match one of the colors in the stripes with one of the colors in the polka dots.

Find two of these pieces, either in a shirt, pair of pants or shoes, and make sure that each of the articles of clothing has one color in common with each other.

Try and pick colors in different patterns that would normally go together if they were solids.

Leopard Print:

Leopard print isn’t just for a night out. Another combination that works with stripes is leopard print.

When mixing leopard print, it should be treated as if it was a neutral color. With its basic colors and bold print, pairing this with an outfit can be difficult.

If you aren’t sure, try something with thing, vertical stripes. The stripes don’t have to be black or brown, but try to keep the colors light. If you still find yourself looking for a pop of color, you can add a cardigan or bold necklace to your look.

Plaid:

Even though winter is almost over, it doesn’t mean we need to put our flannels away. The key to this look is being weary of the colors that clash.

Mixing bold patterns like this is tricky enough, so you don’t want to ruin the look by not using the appropriate colors.

To achieve this look, combine a white and black floral print shift dress. Choose a flannel with two different solid colors that prominently stand out and tie it around your waist.

This will give accentuate your waist, while adding a bit of edge to your outfit. For colder nights, this can be worn regularly to keep you warm, while looking just as good.

Some other things to keep in mind are to mix different patterns with colors that would normally go well together. Colors like black and white, and pinks and blues that would normally be pared in your everyday outfits, can also be paired when mixing patterns.

If combining tops and bottoms is too intimidating, try to incorporate patterns into your outfits by using accessories. Shoes, purses, and scarves are all ways that you can add flair to your look without having to worry about how well they match.

These are just a few different types of combinations that can be made. Don’t be afraid to try new ones.
