MTV Movie Awards: Best and worst looks

A new year signals the start of award show season and with spring comes the MTV Movie Awards.

Celebrities gathered together at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, to celebrate the latest hit movies April 12.

While this award show is purely dedicated to the art of movie performance and the actors involved, the fashion that is showcased before the show draws a huge spotlight.

Jennifer Lopez was the very first person that stole the fashion scene. There are very few moments in her history of fame where she has ever failed to look flawless at an important appearance.

Lopez wore a navy blue skirt suit with a plunging neckline, a new look for the red carpet. With gold detailing on the cuffs and collars and a cinched waist, she brought class and sass in the most presentable way possible.

Actress Kate Mara was the next leading lady who set out with a new fashion trend: an elegant, white two-piece dress. This season is all about minimalism and she hit the nail on the head with her outfit choice.

The structure of it – short sleeves and the thick, silk-like material – is what really made the look stand out, aside from its overall simplicity.

A standout male was actor Miles Teller. For an actor who is always so casual and barely seen in formal attire, he did a great job incorporating the two styles into one look.

Wearing a blue blazer-like jacket, with a mix of two different materials and sleeves rolled up, Teller also added on a statement watch to add the right amount of class. He paired the top with a pair of fitted slacks and brown dress boots to match. These boots are a very in-demand male fashion item at the moment.

Shailene Woodley looked as though she was dressed to go to Coachella; she wore a black and white horizontal striped leotard, high-waist print pants paired with a belt and black ankle boots. The outfit came off as lazy and unprepared.

While the MTV Movie Awards is not considered the most high-class awards show for celebrities to attend, there are still expectations to be met.

She could’ve brought the look together in a more fashionable way with a nice heel rather than a pair of boots and while print pants are on trend, a pair of trousers would have been a good exchange.

The next singer and newly-made actress is someone who is hard to critique because she is usually known for her fabulous and outstanding red carpet and performance looks. Jessie J was an unexpected disappointment with the choice of a dark, plunging, oversized glittery trouser suit.

With the addition of a silver choker necklace, she embodied, “Cher going as a witch for Halloween in the 90s.”

She usually chooses pieces that hug her curves and loves to embrace her femininity, but this time around the pop of sparkle was unimpressive.

Jessie could’ve chosen a better hairstyle, such as a high pony, but instead went for pin-straight locks with two micro braids to add to the almost gothic look.

However, the worst dressed on the red carpet goes to Hailee Steinfeld, a new addition to the “Pitch Perfect” sequel, who had a complete train wreck of an outfit.

The mix of a skirt over shorts with hanging fishnet material was confusing to look at. The green, white and black feathery pattern printed onto the skirt was also outdated.

The sheer, ruffled blouse was a swampy-green color, which showed her bra of the same color scheme, was not flattering. The shoe choice, a calf-high, strap-up heel, added to the dark look.

Michael B. Jordan and Charli XCX are another pair that can be added onto the “for the worse” pack, wearing too much plaid and too much zebra, respectively. These are prints that should not be worn from head to toe.

The cast of “The Avengers” made a beautiful group in terms of fashion and overall looks.

Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson went out of their comfort zone with vibrant, standout colors. Cara Delevingne was dressed to impress in a maroon-colored dress, which is no surprise because she is a model and always struts in the best pieces.

At the MTV Movie Awards, good looks outweighed the bad, and we can only hope that the rest of the year follows the same trend.
