Tyler Conroy uses passions as springboards

Tyler Conroy, Class of 2014 and avid Taylor Swift fan, can finally add “author” to his long list of accomplishments after winning the position of honorary author of Swift’s fan made book.

The contest, held by Simon & Schuster, chose Conroy’s musical submission, “Blank Book Cover (Taylor Swift Parody),” which explains all the reasons why Conroy is Swift’s biggest fan.

“I had friends from all over the world send me photos for the Blank Book Cover video,” Conroy said. “It was so awesome to have so many of my family and friends agree to be a part of this and also get very creative with the photos they sent me.”

The book, according to the publishing company’s website, will be titled “Taylor Swift: This is Our Song” and will focus on celebrating Swift’s ten years in the music industry through the eyes of her dedicated fans.

“My goals for this book are for the fans to have a voice and tell the story of Taylor through our eyes,” Conroy said. “I’m really excited that there are so many Swifties involved in the project because I think, for a book honoring a decade in her career, it’s important to have fans that have been here for the entire decade be a part of it.”

However this isn’t Conroy’s first shot at a Taylor Swift tribute. While at Iona, he performed covers of her songs at numerous events, pioneered the first-ever Taylor Swift musical: “It’s a Love Story,” and even got a “Fearless” tattoo in Swift’s handwriting.

“Being fearless doesn’t mean you’re always brave, being fearless means that you have fears and that’s OK, but it’s fearless to just do it,” Conroy said.

Conroy has continued to spread his love of Swift outside of Iona’s campus in every way he can.

“Music is still my number one passion,” Conroy said. “I’ve played Taylor Swift at local shows, local open mics and I even coordinated a ‘Shake It Off’ Flash Mob through Yankee Candle Village.”

Conroy, who has seen Swift in concert 19 times, said that it never gets old.

“For some artists, they find a style that sells and stick to that and continue to make replicas of that sound. But what I love about Taylor is how much she challenges herself to find originality in everything that she does.”

It’s creativity like this that drives Conroy in his own life. In addition to running social media for a global company, Conroy is working to touch the lives of others the way Swift has touched his through projects like his web series, “TyvidTuesday.”

“I really just want to continue to let Taylor’s career and her music inspire me to do new and original things,” Conroy said. “If I can lead by her example and help others live fearlessly then I’ll feel like I’ve accomplished what I set out to do in life.”

In addition to Swift’s music, Conroy attributes a large portion of his success to his friends and family.

“I’ve had people in my life tear me down for my admiration for Taylor Swift,” Conroy said. “But it’s the friends and family who constantly support everything I do that keep me going.”
