How Iona students can give back to their community during the holiday season

With Thanksgiving almost upon us, some students may be wondering how they can reach out and give thanks to their community. As a college that emphasizes service and giving back to others, this attitude is very prominent at Iona. The holiday season is all about helping others, so consider what you can do to help your community. Whether it is physical labor or donations, it’s important to share your love and kindness with those less fortunate.

Around Thanksgiving, those in need of food can’t always have the giant dinner most people are accustomed to for the holiday. As a way to help out, consider donating or volunteering at your local soup kitchen or food pantry. Often, churches will also host Thanksgiving dinners for the homeless or for families who are unable to provide their own meal. While donations are always needed and appreciated, an extra set of hands doesn’t hurt either. Here in New Rochelle, the Hope Community Center always welcomes volunteers and donations for those in need.

In the same vein, consider looking to meal delivery services in your area. Organizations such as Meals on Wheels deliver Thanksgiving baskets full of food for families who don’t have access to it themselves. If you’re unable to help with delivery, donations are also a great help. At Iona, clubs and organizations also hold a Thanksgiving basket drive, in which everything donated will go to a local family in need.

Another option is to show some appreciation for members in the community. Emergency services such as police officers, firefighters and EMTs often work long hours during the holidays. Try delivering cookies to your local station or offering to help decorate their buildings. Holiday cheer can go a long way! Writing cards to say thank you is always a nice gesture as well.

Finally, tell those around you how much you appreciate them. You can show your thanks through acts of kindness, such as cooking a meal for your family or taking the time to talk to a friend you haven’t seen in a while. Loved ones are sure to appreciate you helping cook Thanksgiving dinner or simply telling them how much they mean to you. Showing someone you care doesn’t have to be complicated; it just has to be meaningful.

While it’s important to serve your community to the best of your ability year round, a little boost around the holidays doesn’t hurt! Give back, and have a great Thanksgiving break!
