Britney Spears’ talent has never really been argued. On the other hand, her good-girl reputation and even her sanity, are sometimes debated. This month, Fox’s hit series “Glee” took on Britney, devoting an entire episode to the occasionally questionable role model. The episode, “Britney/Brittany,” aired as the show’s second of their new season, bringing in nearly 14 million American viewers.

This can be looked at as a comeback for the pop star, that is, if you ignore the end of the episode in which Spears is looked-down upon for being an unfit role model for the respectable glee club.

“I know that Britney’s had some issues in the past but I actually think it’s quite admirable the way she’s gotten her life back together,” says “Glee’s” Emma Pilsbury, the show’s passive guidance counselor. Pilsbury aids the glee club in their argument against club moderator, Will Schuester, for the right to perform a Britney classic at their upcoming homecoming assembly.

Pilsbury suggests that the star is a perfect role model and had made a dramatic comeback. “I think she’s the perfect symbol for the possibility of rebirth,” adds Pilsbury.

Schuester eventually gives in to the pleas of the glee club and, in a quest to prove that he is not uptight, accompanies the club in a risqué performance of Spears’ “Toxic” at the assembly. The not-so-hidden message of the hit along with the provocative dance sequence the glee club members perform, prove to cause more mayhem than Schuester expected. In the words of Sue Sylvestor, the school’s hated but feared cheerleading coach, the over seductive performance combined with the overactive crowd was nothing less than a “Britney Spears sex riot.”

The episode was packed with cameos, humor, and as always, great music. Writers filled the hour-long episode with five Spears covers, four of which included close recreations of Spears’ original music videos as well as celebrity guest appearances from John Stamos and none other than Miss Spears herself.

Dedicated “Glee” fans, also known as “Gleeks,” may have also noticed that the episode made way for cast member Heather Morris to take center stage when her character, Brittany Pierce, was given her first solo of the series.

The hour was also filled with some sexuality. Like any other television show tackling a controversial topic, there was bound to be some harsh opinions on “Glee’s” interpretation of the 90s pop sensation. Targeting a young audience, the writers’ choice to dress characters so closely to Spears’ original controversial costumes might not have been the best idea. The episodes worst slam came from The Parents Television Council, who criticized not only the episode, but the series and Spears herself as well. “The producers of the show can spare us the old song-and-dance about fallen celebs turning their lives around,” the council said in a statement. Nevertheless, bothered parents stand no chance against the show’s ratings. “Britney/Brittany” helped set the stage for the show’s new season, turning even more occasional viewers into full fledged “Gleeks.”

Spears, impressed with her tribute, tweeted about the episode. “I loved it! Thank you guys SO much much for making this happen!” she said to followers on the internet. However, Spears wasn’t the only celebrity to tweet about the show. Hayley Williams, lead singer of Paramore, tweeted about the episode’s rendition of the band’s single, “The Only Exception,” performed by Lea Michele in the last 10 minutes of the Britney episode. “Holy exception!!! Dear everyone on Glee – you rocked our song!” tweeted the pop punk icon after the show.

From celebrities to every day viewers, everyone seems to love “Glee.” With the first two episodes of the new season drawing in a combined total of almost 26 million viewers, the show is practically unstoppable.
