It is well known that “Glee” has become a pop culture phenomenon but on Oct. 5, all that went up in the air as the show’s most controversial and pivotal episode hit the airwaves.

The episode was “Grilled Cheesus” and addressed the topic of religion. The episode starts out with Finn seeing an imprint of Jesus in his grilled cheese and then makes three wishes to the grilled cheese, like Aladdin did on the Genie. If the Cheesus answers his wishes, Finn will honor Jesus in the Glee club that week.

The real subject of religion appears after Kurt’s father has a heart attack and is near death and the Glee kids are trying to ensure faith in Kurt. It then comes out that Kurt is an atheist, and has no belief in any type of religion.

The rest of the episode involves a back and forth discussion about God and who believes and who doesn’t.

Producer Ryan Murphy really took a chance with this controversial topic but it is not the first time Murphy has addressed touchy subjects on the hit show.

Since the first season, Murphy has dealt with character Kurt Hummel’s sexuality and has written many emotional scenes having to do with him coming out to his friends and his father. In today’s world, addressing issues like that on a hit television series is necessary.

“Glee” has become a staple for showing kids that it’s okay to be a little out of the box. The Glee kids are constantly having slushy drinks thrown in their face because to the football players and cheerleaders, they are considered to be “weird” and unpopular.

In last season’s “Theatricality” episode, the character Tina is called to the principal’s office because she is dressing “goth” and she is then told that she is no longer allowed to dress that way. The glee club then performs Lady Gaga songs showing that it’s okay to be different and that no one should be told what they should or should not wear or who they should be.

In today’s society, kids and teenagers need such reassurance that they are important and that they could do anything they set their mind too. Watching “Glee” can give those kids the motivation they need.

When you turn “Glee” on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m., you see an eclectic group of people on your screen; a blonde cheerleader, a wheel chair bound boy, and a homosexual teenage boy. Watching “Glee” can truly empower kids to be their own person. It shows them that it’s okay to be different and today, people need that kind of empowerment.

On the contrary to many reports that “Glee” is just another “High School Musical” type show where kids sing covers of popular songs, it is, in fact, a show where you can see different types of people and be reassured that it’s okay to be different.
