New administration emphasizes integrity

The Integrity in Reporting Committee was organized in response to recent events regarding the suspension of Warren Rosenberg as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Rosenberg was suspended due to inaccuracies found in the data he was in charge of reporting.

The role of the committee is to investigate what and how much information was misreported to the various outside groups, such as the Counsel on Independent Colleges and Universities. The information that was found to be misreported so far has been found to concern incoming student data, such as SAT scores.

The committee has done a preliminary investigation and is continuing to look further into what has been misreported. When they complete their findings, they will release the information to the Iona community.

Ionians may have noticed the difference between the way the administration handled this scandal compared to the financial one last year, when Marie Thornton was accused of embezzling money from the school. Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Nickerson attributed this difference to the differing leadership styles of the two presidents. Nyre wants to be very open about the situation.

Nickerson said, “One of the principle reasons I took the Interim position was because of the commitment of Nyre to integrity and doing the right thing for the institution.” However, the outside organizations that receive these reports are glad Iona has come forward on its own.

The Integrity in Reporting Committee is not the only group investigating the inaccuracies. There is also an outside firm looking into what has happened. Nickerson said this group is independent from the committee. They will also present their findings to the outside reporting agencies, to be sure that everything matches up.

The committee is composed of a variety of members from the Iona community and is being advised by Hipple & Co., a public relations firm.
