Machado has sights on NBA

This has been a record-breaking season for Iona senior point guard Scott Machado. After leading the nation in assists for the Gaels basketball team, the top offensive school in the nation, Machado was named an Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention for his great year.

This accomplishment only adds to the numerous postseason accolades that the future NBA draft pick has compiled this season.

Machado was already named the MAAC Player of the Year for 2012 and to the MAAC’s First Team All-Conference for a season where he averaged 13.6 points per game and an NCAA leading 9.9 assists per game.

Machado was able to set the Gaels’ single-season record for assists with 327, and finished his college career with 880 assists, the most of any player in the history of both Iona and the MAAC.

Machado’s exploits have gotten him shortlisted for the final 15 Naismith College Player of the Year candidates. Machado is also shortlisted with ten other candidates for the Bob Cousy Award, which is given to the best point guard in the nation.

Due to the great play that Machado recorded, the Gaels were able to secure a first place regular season finish in the MAAC and earned an at-large bid to enter their first NCAA tournament since 2006.

Along the way, the Gaels defeated several NCAA tournament teams and earned the respect of many people in the college basketball community.

Machado is currently ranked as a late first round draft pick according to ESPN, and would be the first NBA draft pick to come from Iona since Sean Green was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in 1992.

Due to his great form this season, Machado was shortlisted alongside 19 of the most outstanding Division I seniors to participate in the Reese’s College All-Star Game during the weekend of the Final Four.
