An ode to Lenny Korir

Lenny Korir, the distance runner from Iten, Kenya will finish his run at Iona this May as his senior year comes to an end. Korir is a tremendous athlete who has not only earned an astounding number of awards in both indoor track and cross country, but has also made his mark as an Iona Gael nationwide. In the course of only two and a half years at Iona, Korir has managed to earn over thirty honors and awards, some of which are on a national level. Korir was a two-time National Champion in the indoor 5K and outdoor 10k in 2011, is an eight time All-American, a two-time NCAA Regional Champion, a six-time MAAC Champion, and an Iona record holder. Korir’s favorite part about Iona was training and competing for the college. “It has been an exciting experience for me because I have achieved a lot of accomplishments that I did not know I would ever have achieved,” Korir said. “I will miss the support I received from my teammates and my coaches while I trained, especially during the hill training.” While most people in Korir’s shoes would probably claim their favorite memory as a runner at Iona to be finishing as a national champion, Korir in retrospect relishes in the race that helped take him there. “My favorite memory was finishing fourth in my first cross country nationals,” Korir explained. “That race opened the door for me to go win the 5k indoor and 10k outdoor titles.” During his time at Iona, Korir has become one of the most distinguished athletes in Iona history. “I would like to thank my coaches and my teammates, both on the men’s and women’s teams.” Korir said. “In them I had a family who has always had my back. I will miss them a lot.” Iona will certainly miss cheering Korir on next year as well.
