Iona Golf has concluded their fall schedule after placing seventh overall in the Seton Hall Invite. Although they have been inconsistent, the golf team put up some serious competition this season, giving them momentum heading into the spring.

The Gaels entered day two of the Seton Hall Invite in fifth place after two rounds of day one shooting an overall team score of 303, twelve strokes behind the leader, LIU. After a good start, the Gaels collapsed again, falling to seventh place to finish the tournament.

“This has been the theme for our fall season,” said Head Coach Matt Glovaski. “We’ve put ourselves in a position to win; we just need to work on playing our best golf in the second and third rounds of play.” The Gaels shot a 309 in the second half of the tournament, finishing with an overall score of 612 and placing in seventh.

Senior Dylan Newman tied for fourth place overall, shooting a score of 146 (+4). Although it was not his best performance of the fall season, he has been the most consistent player.

“Dylan has just completed one of the historic seasons in Iona Golf history. I am extremely proud of his accomplishments,” said Glovaski regarding Newman’s season and college career. “Dylan has been one of the best golfers since first arriving [at] Iona four years ago.”

Senior Doug Hoppe shot a 153 (+11) and placed 23rd. Senior Scott Gall shot a 156 (+14) and placed 34th. Senior Andrew Graham shot a 157 (+15) and tied for 35th place. Sophomore Tom McHugh shot a 165 (+163) and placed 50th.

The Gaels are looking forward to the spring season as they prepare to work on their consistency and capitalizing on good rounds. “This will be our main focus as we prepare for the spring season,” said Glovaski. He is optimistic for a great spring if they can learn to put back to back rounds together. As well as having a large senior class, he hopes “we can come together as a team to collectively play the best golf of their careers. I think it would be a fitting end to some great careers.”
