Gael Express approved for 2013-2014 academic year

Last month many Iona students celebrated the news that a Gael Express proposal had been approved for the 2013-2014 school year.

After much debate and at least six different proposals, the Student Government Association has been able to come to a compromise with the college.

This compromise continues the Gael Express’ routes and does not reduce the number of vans or the hours of operation. It does include, however, a $55 fee to help with the expense of running the Gael Express.

Earlier this semester, when the college came out with the new budget for the 2013-2014 school year, they announced that the Gael Express would be discontinued along with the removal of students from the Marriott hotel.

Use of the Gael Express, though, had not decreased despite the fact that many students had moved from the Marriott to East Hall this fall.

The Gael Express is used by many students to travel around New Rochelle.

Some need to get to internships in the city, like junior Vincent Carbone.

“I do use the Gael Express to get to the train for my internship, so I am definitely glad they continued it,” he said.

Other students, like junior Megan Brigance, use it to get around New Rochelle.

“I don’t have a car on campus, since I’m from Missouri, so the Gael Express is really useful when I just need to go to the grocery store or have a babysitting job or something. I also go to the New Rochelle Public library a lot, and that wouldn’t really be possible without the Gael Express,” she said.

As for the fee that has been implemented, students seem to accept it as a necessary evil.

“I would obviously rather there not be an added fee, but if that is what it takes for it to run, then I’m okay with it,” said Carbone.
