Make a Difference Week is in full swing.

On Sept. 28, Dr. Nyre rolled out the first pitch at the Week’s opening event, the Success Center & Best Buddies Kickball game. Few events could better encapsulate the spirit of Make a Difference Week, with Iona students cheering on disabled adults and local students enrolled in tutoring at the Success Center. The week began with an Opening Mass in Spellman Hall, and will include a Project Bro trip on Oct. 4, in which students will have the opportunity to visit elderly Christian Brothers at the St. Joseph’s Residence. A group of students already participated in the Walk 4 Hearing: The Hearing Loss Association of America Annual Walk on Sept. 29, and on Oct. 6, Iona students will have the opportunity to participate in either a Walk for Autism or the Out of the Darkness Walk for suicide prevention.

On Sept. 30 in the End Zone, Phi Sigma Sigma held their fifth annual Extend Yourself for Breast Cancer event, where volunteers receive pink hair extensions to raise awareness for breast cancer. According to one sister, junior Kristal Tziazas, the event seemed an appropriate beginning to October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

As an organization founded on sisterhood, sophomore Samantha Cosentino felt that this event resonated with Phi Sigma Sigma’s commitment to “mothers, sisters, daughters” and “all the friends and family members suffering from Breast Cancer.”

One would be hard-pressed not to find some way to become meaningfully involved in Make A Difference Week.
