Swimming and diving sets numerous school records

Setting school records is never an easy thing to do. On Feb. 1, the Iona College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams set numerous records in their meet at Fairfield.

On the women’s side, the Gaels won 171-124. The men were victorious 168-124.

In the women’s 200 meter freestyle relay, the group of freshmen Kathryn Nevin, Natalie Bowman, sophomore Melissa Dorsch, and senior Kerri-Anne Dodenhoff claimed first place and smashed a school record by posting a time of 1:52.16. The previous record of 2:01.01 stood for 10 years.

In the 200 meter relay, with a combination of senior Maria Skeivys, sophomore Sophia Hyokyvaara, Nevin and Dodenhoff came in first with a time of 2:04.26, breaking the school record set in 2010.

Bowman led the charge with three first place finishes. She finished first in the 200 meter freestyle, the 100 meter freestyle and the 50 meter freestyle.

Skeivys was another Gael with three first place finishes of her own. Highlighting her performance was breaking her previous record in the 100 meter backstroke, as she completed the event with a time of 1:08.22. She touched first in the 200 meter backstroke, breaking a 2010 record of 2:27.46. She also won the 200 meter IM.

Senior Brigitte Doughty won the 800 meter freestyle, finishing with a time of 9:34.89, and the 200 meter butterfly with a time of 2:33.79.

Sophomore Mary Ellen Mangione defeated her opponents in the 400 meter freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:38.99, and freshman Maria Lopez took first in the 100 meter butterfly event with a time of 1:08.43.

“Fairfield was really exciting for us because all of the pieces were starting to come together and a lot of good races came out of that meet,” Mangione said.

On the men’s side, in the 100 meter backstroke, freshman Keegan Boisson-Yates placed first with a time of 59.97, sailing by the Iona record of 1:05.51, set back in 2006. Senior Mark Wallace and sophomore Brandon Hadhazy came in second and third, respectively.

Freshman Collin Purrman took the 200 meter freestyle event with a time of 1:59.15.

Seniors Ryan Bacci and Tyler Elfert, along with Boisson-Yates and freshman Matthew Rothman finished in first in the 200 meter medley relay with a time of 1:52.07. The team of Wallace, freshmen Joseph Shields, Liam Oberlander, and sophomore Tommy Keefe placed third.

Bacci touched first with a time of 1:11.36 in the 100 meter breaststroke. In the 200 meter butterfly Elfert placed second with a time of 2:15.94 and sophomore Daniel McGovern came in third, four seconds behind his teammate.

In the 50 meter freestyle, senior Justin Grigull touched first with a time of 24.93. In the 100 meter freestyle, Elfert touched first with a time of 55.09; Purrman took first in the 200 meter backstroke, posting a time of 2:16.22.

Grigull finished first in the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 4:12.66, topping the school record set back in 2012.

In the 100 meter butterfly, Boisson-Yates set a school record with a time of 1:00.10 but came in second in the event.

The 200 meter freestyle relay saw the Maroon & Gold take the top three spots. Elfert, Rothman, Keefe, and Grigull took the top spot with a time of 1:39.24, which broke the old record by five seconds. Hadhazy, senior Lee Stiles, freshman Bryan Veals and sophomore Scott Martin placed second with a time of 1:41.95, and the tandem of Wallace, Oberlander, sophomore Rafael Duran and junior Connor Reid took third.

“ The Fairfield meet was a great way to end the regular season,” McGovern said. “The wins on both the men’s and women’s sides have us energized.”

Prior to this record setting day, the Maroon & Gold traveled to Saint Peter’s for a matchup with the Peacocks. The women’s swimming and diving team lost 171-95, and the men fell 155-121.

Sophomore Alicia Raffle won the women’s three meter diving contest. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the team of Nevin, Bowman, Dorsch and Doughty edged the Peacocks by one second.

Nevin and Hyokyvaara finished second and third in the 100 yard breaststroke. In the 100 yard backstroke, the Maroon & Gold took second and third again; this time it was Skeivys and sophomore Leigh Musselman, respectively.

In the 200 yard medley relay, the squad of Nevin, Skeivys, Mangione and Hyokyvaara came in second with a time of 1:54.12.

On the men’s side, Iona had teams place second, third and fourth in the 200 yard medley relay, but Saint Peter’s took first.

Grigull won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 49.15 and placed second in the 50 yard freestyle.

In the 200 yard IM, Boisson-Yates claimed first. He placed second in the 100 yard backstroke (53.44) and third in the 200 yard backstroke (2:04.29)

In the 1000 yard freestyle, Purrman touched second with a time of 10:15.16, and Martin came in third nine seconds behind his teammate.

The 200 yard freestyle saw Elfert claim first with a time of 1:50.79. Veals came in third, and Rothman took fourth.

The 500 freestyle saw Iona claim spots three through six. The order went Purrman, Martin, Stiles and Veals.

In the 200 yard IM, it was Iona all the way. Boision-Yates finished first with Hadhazy, senior Nick Kotonias and Veals claiming the next three spots.

Iona secured first, third and fourth in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The group of Elfert, Grigull, Rothman, and Keefe won the race with a time of 1:29.97.

The Maroon & Gold will compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships on Feb. 13, 14 and 15 in Buffalo, N.Y.

“I can definitely see our team doing very well this coming weekend after how hard we worked,” Mangione said. “It is going to be very fun to see what we accomplish and to see all of our hard work pay off.”
