Greek life came together during the week of April 27 for the annual Greek Week and had fun with all the events, especially “Western Wednesday” and the “Lip Sync” competition.

On April 30, the Iona College Council for Greek Governance hosted their event Western Wednesday for another year in Hynes Gymnasium. Students enjoyed free food, photo booth pictures and even a mechanical bull, along with everyone’s favorite country songs complimenting the western themed event. Students line danced to the booming country songs with some wearing their favorite country themed gear as well.

“The Western Wednesday event is a way for people involved in Greek life to come together in a competitive-free atmosphere where people can relax and have fun,” said senior Jeremy Krueger, vice president for the Council for Greek Governance.

“Getting together for the Western Wednesday event is a fun way to meet new people and expand our social networking,” said junior Tom Volo, member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity “Its not only for people involved in Greek life, but all students are welcome.”

On May 3, in the Murphy Auditorium, the annual lip sync competition took place. Every Iona College fraternity and sorority participated in the competition. The constant chants of sororities and fraternities filled the air of the Murphy Auditorium that night. Greek life students gave it their all on stage, and demonstrated their great pride and unity in their chapters.

“The event was fun and it seemed like everyone really enjoyed it. After seeing all the performances of the night, it showed that every chapter put a lot of effort into their performances,” said junior Sanjay Singh, member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. “It’s nice when the Greek community is brought together and for something people can get excited for.”

Phi Sigma Sigma sorority was a huge hit with the crowd in the lip sync portion of the competition, and later won the lip sync event. During the event, awards were given throughout the night. Phi Sigma Sigma won the award for academic excellence. Phi Sigma Sigma’s Bridget Rohde and Briana Luca won the awards for Greek Scholar of the Year and Sorority Woman of the Year.

Senior Gabby Popoli has been running the Phi Sigma Sigma lip sync for a few years now.

“I think the reason we did so well was not only that we put a lot of time into it, but also that we had such a good time with it,” she said. “The success of the group came from us wanting it to be a fun memory, and being able to spend it with the amazing girls in our sorority.”

The other awards went to Zeta Kappa Chi’s Mike Brescia for Fraternity Man of the Year and to Phi Gamma Chi sorority for Organization of the Year.

When it came to the winners of Greek Week, Delta Theta Beta sorority rose to the top to claim the title. Freshman Alexis Severo experienced Greek Week for the first time this year.

“It was such a fun experience, and an exciting one,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the events of Greek Week in the future.”
