American Music Awards filled with lively performances

Camilla Cabello took home four awards after providing some of the night’s most notable performances.

The 2018 American Music Awards took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Oct. 9. At this year’s ceremony, there were 15 unforgettable performances and more than 20 artists who took home awards.

There were a number of memorable moments but here are some of the highlights from the night:

1. Taylor Swift takes over

Taylor Swift opened the show by performing “I Did Something Bad” from her newest album “Reputation.” With bright red lights and smoke enveloping the stage, Swift brought the audience to their feet with her energetic dance moves and vocals. Swift put on a mischievous and playful façade as backup dancers following her every move during the performance.

In addition to performing, Swift also took home four awards. She won the awards for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, Tour of the Year, Favorite Pop/Rock Album and Artist of the Year. While accepting her award for Artist of the Year, Swift got political and encouraged viewers to vote in the November elections.

2. Host Tracee Ellis Ross performs a striking number

Ross – who also hosted last year’s ceremony – made her on-stage debut for the night with an epic dance routine. Accompanied by backup dancers, Ross danced to “Bodak Yellow,” “This is America,” “Apes—t,” “Level Up” and “Run the World (Girls).” To conclude her performance, Ross danced to a mashup of Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” and Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk.”

3. Ciara dominates the stage with Missy Elliott

While Ciara was performing a remix of “Level Up,” Missy Elliott made an appearance mid-performance to deliver her rap verse. With choreography that had almost everyone out of their seats dancing, Ciara and her backup dancers dominated the stage.

4. Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin perform “I Like It”

The trio took control of the stage with their spicy single “I Like It.” As her husband, Offset, cheered her on from the crowd, Cardi B danced and rapped in a whimsical dress. After Cardi B delivered her verse, Bad Bunny entered the stage in a shopping cart. The stage was full of color, dancers and live guitarists. J Balvin made his way on stage to give the performance a dynamic finish.

Cardi B also took home awards for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist, Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Song and Favorite Soul/R&B Song.

5. Shawn Mendes performs “Lost in Japan” with Zedd

With cherry blossoms and purple lights in the background, Mendes stood in front of his microphone and played his guitar as he sang the lyrics to “Lost in Japan,” while Zedd played the piano.

6. Jennifer Lopez delivers on new single “Limitless”

Jennifer Lopez performed the new single from her upcoming film “Second Act.” Taking the stage in a silver one-piece, Lopez showcased throughout her performance that like her song, she truly is limitless.

7. Mariah Carey debuts “With You”

In a tight, hot pink dress that covered the stage, Carey stood still as male dancers moved around her. In an eloquent performance, Carey’s voice provided a soothing, almost tranquil ambiance.

8. Camila Cabello performs “Consequences”

In an emotional performance, Camila Cabello sang her new single “Consequences,” which is about the harmful effects of toxic relationships. In a long black gown and pink gloves, the singer was accompanied by a live orchestra that emphasized the passion in her performance.

Cabello also took home the awards for New Artist of the Year, Favorite Pop/Rock Song, Collaboration of the Year and Favorite Music Video.

9. Billy Eichner Encourages Viewers to Vote

While presenting the award for Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist with actress Kathryn Hahn, Billy Eichner went off script to remind viewers of the importance of the November elections. He stressed that everyone’s vote counts and that the viewers should use their vote to better America.

10. The Night Ends with a Tribute to Aretha Franklin

Gladys Knight, a long-time friend of Franklin, led an all-star gospel tribute honoring the Queen of Soul. Following a video of Franklin’s history with the AMAs, Knight performed a rendition of “Amazing Grace.” Knight was then joined on stage by Ledisi, Mary Mary, Donnie McClurkin and CeCe Winans to finish off the show.
