The Iona Players take to the stage once again, trading in their Ruby Slippers for sequins and habits. Following their successful run of performances such as “Urinetown”, “Twelfth Night”, “Sideshow” and “The Wizard of Oz”, the Iona Players are putting on a performance of “Sister Act: The Musical”, based off of the beloved 1992 musical crime comedy film starring Whoopi Goldberg. This performance brings the sounds of the 1970s to life with a soundtrack inspired by Motown, soul, and disco.
The show is about Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer whose life takes an unexpected turn after she witnesses a crime committed by her gangster boyfriend. She goes to the police for help and is placed under witness protection. To save her life, the police hid her in the last place anyone would look for her: a struggling convent.
John Deveraux, a Junior at Iona University who plays Joey Bustamente, says that “performing with the Iona Players is such a privilege. All the members are immensely talented and are giving their all for this show!”
For other members of the cast, this show serves as their final bow. Tristen Rosa, a Senior at Iona University who plays Pablo in Sister Act, says that “It has been a pleasure working alongside the Iona Players in their production of Sister Act. The entire cast and crew have been a joy to work with, and the show itself has been a really fun experience to be a part of. I look forward to showing audiences the hard work this group has put into this production, as well as having a solid show to end off my senior year on.”
The Iona Players’ performances will be on April 10th at 7:00 PM, Saturday April 11th at 2:00 PM, Saturday April 11th at 7:00 PM, and Sunday April 12th at 3:00 PM. The show will be performed in the Murphy Auditorium and is free for Iona University students and faculty!
