The world is pretty scary right now. The news is overwhelming with bleak headlines, and social media isn’t much better. The constant stream of awful information can really empty our emotional and mental “cups”, leaving us feeling drained, angry, and thoroughly overwhelmed.
While it is incredibly important to stay informed, sometimes we have to put down our devices, take a breath, and participate in an activity that refuels us. So, without further ado, here are a few of my favorite ways to refill our emotional and mental “cups” with some joy!
- Engaging in an escapism based hobby- Fiction is a wonderful place, where our minds can travel to wherever they’d like to be. Engaging in activities like reading, writing, playing video games, watching TV, and watching movies can be very effective places to live the life of another. Additionally, creative hobbies, like playing music, listening to music, cosplay, drawing, painting, and sculpting can also be incredibly beneficial for your mind and body! Anything that allows you to “get lost” in the media.
- Joke with friends- While the phrase is cliche, laughter truly is the best medicine. Spending time with friends that bring you joy, and specifically make you laugh, can be so helpful in lifting your spirits through tough times.
- Go to events on campus From RA’s, to CM’s, to clubs and organizations, there are so many fun things to do on campus. If you’re ever thinking “uggh there’s nothing to do on campus right now” I guarantee you that there’s a flyer out there of something happening on campus that you missed. Sometimes getting out there and meeting new people is the perfect thing to lift a heavy heart.
- Eat food- Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Of course it’s important to eat food, we need it to live” and yes, you are right. What I mean is to treat yourself! Get yourself a nice dinner, try something new, get yourself an appropriate amount of ice cream (I struggle with that last one). Break free from dietary mundanity, and enjoy your meals. A favorite food can be the perfect thing to soothe the mind.
- Get involved in your community- Beyond these cute and happy distractions, the best way to fill an empty mental and emotional “cup” is to take action. If you see a headline that upsets you, or something is going on in your community that doesn’t sit right with you, do something about it! There’s plenty of ways to give back to your community and support those in need.
