Every student gravitates towards different spots around campus. School becomes our second home, and we discover places to socialize, relax, and perhaps most importantly (for some) – study. Where each individual feels most comfortable and can perform at their best is a personal matter. So, I wanted to take a look at where students at Iona like to study, and why it is that they choose to spend time there.
First and foremost, and admittedly a big reason I came to Iona, the “Harry Potter Room.” More officially known as the second-floor east wing of the Ryan Library. This room is the quintessential picture of university academia. With books lining the mahogany shelves, arched glass windows reaching up to the ceiling, and plenty of lamp-lit nooks to choose from, this is my personal favorite study spot.
One student noted that at first, he didn’t like the deafening silence but has come to enjoy how peaceful and devoid of distractions it is, especially at night. The students who come here always seem to be immersed in whatever book they are reading or essay they are frantically typing.
Next up is the newly renovated LaPenta Student Union. The ground floor offers a cozy communal area for students to socialize and get work done. There is a quiet chatter in the background that provides a lively air while still allowing productive work sessions. There is a wide variety of seating options from the high tables, the plush maroon couch by the fire, and a few inviting diner-style booths.
A group of friends enjoying one of these booths remarked that they loved the warm lighting, cozy ambiance, and energetic feel of the Student Lounge. As I’ve incorporated this new space into my routine, I’ve been coming with a warm drink from the Starbucks next door and getting light work done whether with friends or just to enjoy the communal feel.
And lastly, a quick shuttle ride away is the budding Bronxville campus. To enjoy the sprawling outdoor space, students can study in the gazebos or on the Adirondack chairs around The Quad. In addition to its high-tech hospital stimulations, the Kelly Center for Health Sciences offers a variety of seating options from group study rooms to private study carrels. Even the Café at Bronxville provides an excellent study environment.
A beautiful thing is that college is truly tailored to each student and what they choose to make of it. The small routines we come to love such as late-night study sessions in the Ryan Library or coffee with friends in the Student Union really tie together the experience we have. As we grow and our priorities shift, we will certainly gravitate towards different spaces, and at the end of the day how nice it will be to look back and see the places that shaped who we are today.
