Women’s swim team tops Jaspers

The Iona College women’s swimming team opened the 2010 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season at home on Friday against Manhattan. The women’s team thwarted the competition by winning every single event in a 155-97 route of the Jaspers.

 

The Gaels opened up the night by winning the 200-yard medley relay. The team of freshman Maria Skeivys, junior Jamie Manser, senior Sam Cody, and freshman Kerri-Anne Dodenhoff took first for the Gaels with a time of 1:55.81. Iona’s other relay team which included sophomores Kelsie Johnson, Zuzanna Michalak, freshman Sophia Hyokyvaara, and senior Sarah Walker took second in the race finishing in 1:57.85.

After winning the relay, Iona snagged the top two spots in the first individual event, which was the 1000-yard free. Sophomore Victoria Ponzo led the way with a winning time of 11:16.64, while senior Christine Williams was second in 11:28.39.

 

Ionacontinued to control the tempo of the meet by sweeping the top-three sports of the 200-yard free. First place junior Mackenzie Mone touched the wall in 1:59.56 followed by newcomer Brigette Doughty who finished in a time of 2:01.23. Finishing the sweep for Iona, senior Christine Larking swam a time of 2:08.24.

 

Furthermore, Skeivys notched a victory in the 100-yard backstroke for the Gaels with a time of 1:04.04. Close behind was teammate Johnson in 1:04.34.

 

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Iona swept the top three once again. Manser finished first in 1:09.56, while Dodenhoff was second touching the wall in 1:09.69 and Walker was third with a time of 1:10.56.

For the 200-yard fly, Ponzo took home another victory by swimming to a time of 2:17.01. Cody was third for Iona and sophomore Kara Nowakowski was fourth.

Following Iona’s string of victories, Mone took first in two events also. First, she won the 50-yard free finishing in 26.15. After winning this event she came back strong to win the 100-yard free in 56.30.

In addition, teammate Skeivys continued a dominating day by winning the 200-yard breaststroke easily with a time of 2:33.72.

In the 500-yard free, Doughty registered a time of 5:21.26 and Cody helped Iona by winning the 100-yard fly with a time of 1:03.90.

Michalak finished the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:20.60, while Hyokyvaara swam 2:24.76.

The foursome of Manser, Doughty, Dodenhoff, and Mone completed the 200-yard relay with a time of 1:44.
