The swim team’s good start sets the tone of the season.

The Iona College men’s swimming team opened up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play last Friday at the Hynes Athletics Center Pool with an impressive victory over Manhattan.

The Gaels dominated the pool all night by winning an impressive 12 of 14 events en route to a 127-124 victory.

In the opening event, the relay team of freshman Ralph Porrazzo, sophomore Chris Yacobacci, senior Patrick O’Reilly, and freshman Justin Grigull took home the team title, finishing first with a winning time of 1:41.45.

Iona’s second relay squad that consisted of freshmen Mark Wallace, Chris Giovine, Ryan Bacci, and sophomore Jay Wegimont placed third with a time of 1:45.51.

In the 1000-yard freestyle, the Gaels occupied three of the top four spots. Newcomer Nick Kotonias took first with a winning time of 10:12.74. Sophomore Zachary Benoit was third with a time of 10:38.88, while senior Michael O’Connor was fourth with a time of 11:23.74.

Grigull notched an individual victory with a first place time of 1:50.93 in the 200-yard free. Junior Raymond Joyal was second touching the wall in 1:55.31, while freshman Patrick Garvey finished the sweep taking third in a time of 1:57.32.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Ralph Porrazzo won easily in a time of 59.97, with Giovine taking third, and Bacci taking fifth.

For the second time, the Gaels swept the top three spots in an event. Patrick O’Reilly led the Gaels in the 200-yard fly with a winning time of 2:07.47. Sophomore Michael Wu was behind his teammate, while Jay Wegimont completed the sweep in third place.

For the 50-yard free, Grigull was strong placing second in 22.60. Senior swimmer Graham Weir was third with a time of 22.98, while Porrazzo was fourth completing the race in 23.25.

Grigull came back in the next event by winning the 100-yard free in 48.54. Weir was third and freshman Curtis Cello was fifth for the Gaels.

Iona’s next meet will be Nov. 13 in Buffalo N.Y. as they take on Canisius at 10:00 a.m.
