Tangled, explicit, and astonishing only begin to describe David Fincher’s new film “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” With its intricate plot based on the bestselling novel by Steig Larson (the movie does in fact follow the novel exceptionally well) as well as the outstanding performances by Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, this film proves to be an extremely well done cinematic experience.  The movie does have a few disturbing scenes, but however graphic the film may be, it cannot be denied that the plot and character development is great and remains true to the internationally successful novel.  The story is complicated. The plot follows journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig) who has found himself in trouble for libel. Blomkvist is called upon by an old, very wealthy business man, Henrik Vanger (played by Christopher Plummer) who offers help on the condition that Blomkvist helps investigate the murder of his young niece, Harriett. At the same time, the story follows Lisabeth Salander, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” (Mara) who is portrayed as a very independent, non-social girl, and one of the best researchers available, successful through hacking. These two main characters unite when Blomkvist calls upon Salander to help him investigate Harriett’s murder.  Throughout the movie, the audience reacted heavily. Whispers and murmurs circulated in the theatre, as well as gasps and abandoned seats. For the people who stayed until the end, when the credits began rolling up, everyone sat glued staring at the screen for a few more seconds.  The high points of the movie were of course the plot, and the acting. The actors encompassed the characters of the story, specifically Mara with an outstanding performance. Her portrayal of Lisabeth Salander, an extremely complicated character, was believable and understood. She stole the show. The cameras and script also helped to make the movie a success. Everything was well done, professional and true to Larson’s original manuscript. There is, however, one turnoff to the movie: severe violence and graphic content. It may be one of the most disturbing movies of the year. Nothing is left up to the imagination.  Overall, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is filled with plenty of entertainment. It has adventure, mystery, violence and a great plot with intriguing characters, and it brings the viewer on a roller coster of diverse events. This film will stay on the mind of its viewers far after leaving the theater.
