Softball sweeps two doubleheaders in MAAC play

The Iona College softball team faced Saint Peter’s College at Rice Oval on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader. The Gaels won the first game with a walk off 2-1 win and then won game two 8-0. In game one, senior Alyssa Maiese hit a single in the bottom of the second inning, while a passed ball moved her to third. She then scored when the throw to the plate on a single from senior Allyssa James was fumbled by Saint Peter’s catcher. Chelsea Crews, at bat for St. Peter’s, drove in Francesca D’Amato with an RBI ground out to second base allowing Saint Peter’s to score, tying the game at one. In the bottom of the seventh with one out, senior Chelsea Sheehan of St. Peter’s made an error. Junior Cari Anderson reached on another Saint Peter’s error, allowing Sheehan to score from second base, giving the Gaels the victory. Senior pitcher Sarah Jackson allowed five hits and one unearned run in seven innings, while striking out eight, giving her the win. Saint Peter’s Shelby Beaver got the loss, allowing two unearned runs and four hits. In game two, Junior Eileen McCann hit a solo home run to left centerfield, giving Iona an early lead in the first inning. In the second inning, Iona scored again when junior Beth Kann reached on another error by Saint Peter’s. This allowed James to score, but Iona was unable to tally any more runs, leaving the bases loaded. In the third, McCann got a double and Maiese walked. Senior Deanne Algeo hit a sacrifice-bunt, putting two in scoring position. James then hit a single, allowing the two to score. Iona now took the lead 4-0. In the fifth with one out, Algeo and Maiese hit back-to-back singles, as Maiese would score when James hit an RBI single, allowing Algeo to move to second. Sheehan hit a single, putting the runner on the corners before Kann hit an RBI single, giving the Gaels a 6-0 lead. Iona rallied two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, giving Iona the final 8-0 lead. Maiese got the game two win, only allowing two hits while striking out eight. Beaver got the loss for Saint Peter’s, allowing one earned run and five hits.
