Kickstarter makes ‘Mars’ movie a reality

Once upon a time, there was a TV series about a spunky teenage girl trying to solve the murder of her best friend while surviving the social hell that’s known as high school. Oh, and also help her P.I. father with some cases. Her name was Veronica Mars.

The show lasted for three seasons, first airring in 2004 and starring Kristen Bell. The untimely cancellation ended on an abrupt note, causing unrest for fans all over who demanded more. That’s when the rumors of a movie began.

Creator Rob Thomas, as well as many of the cast members, including Bell, expressed hope over a possible movie yet there was more than enough complications to stop it from ever becoming a reality. One of those main problems was the lack of funding. Yet, with such a large fan base still holding out years later, there was still hope.

Thomas turned to Kickstarter, a website that plays host to funding creative campaigns, and asked the general public to give whatever they could to help make the dream a reality.

No one had much hope since financing a film does cost a hefty amount. Incentives were even offered, such as tshirts, signed posters or even a walk on role in the film. It all depended how much a person donated.

In less the eleven hours the $2 million goal was reached, and the Veronica Mars Movie was given the green light. With such a fast reaction from fans, the press turned an interested eye to the project.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Thomas said, “And now today has exceeded the wildest pipe dream I let myself entertain. Holy cow. We better make a good movie. These amazing fans have stepped up. We better deliver.”

In the same interview Bell said, “I knew ‘Veronica Mars’ fans were cool, but I had no idea they could rally with such power. They are unstoppable — just like Veronica. I will have a permanent blush on my face, feeling so lucky to be associated with this entire thing.”

Naturally, fans immediately went to ask who was involved and what the film would be about. Last audiences saw, Veronica’s father (Enrico Colantoni) was running a hard race for sheriff and bad boy/on-again-off-again boyfriend Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) was still showing how much he cared for Mars. Then there’s the goof surfer played by Ryan Hansen, best friends played by Percy Daggs III and Tina Majorino, and the sometimes reformed ex-con portrayed by Francis Capra. Currently, only Bell is definitely confirmed to be part of the project.

Colantoni, Dohring and Hansen all appeared in a video alongside Bell and Thomas promoting the funding project, which is still on Kickstarter, to the general public so it’s a safe bet that they’ll eventually be involved.

Thomas said to EW, “I want [all the actors] in the movie. The assumption is they’ll all be in the movie. We’re in negotiations with everyone. It’s one of those things where everybody wants to do it, I want everybody in it — just deals need to be made.”

So what will the plot be about?

After completing both undergraduate and graduate school with the past behind her, Veronica comes back to Neptune and gets sucked back into the P.I. game. A high school reunion is promised as well.

For those who did not follow the series but are interested, Thomas assures they will not be left out. In an interview with TV Line he said, “All you need to know is that Veronica was a teenage private eye and she’s given it up. And there will be a moment early in the movie that will bring her back to Neptune and make her give being a private detective one more shot.”

The film is expected to come out in 2014, leaving fans waiting with bated breath for the moment to finally arrive.
