The Hangover III- is it really needed?

Phil, Alan and Stu are back at it again for a third and final comeback in “The Hangover” film series. There is no wedding and no bachelor party this time around, though. So, where could the insane trio crash next?

The film’s director Todd Phillips says, “The Hangover Part III is Alan’s story. He’s going through a crisis after the death of his father, and the Wolfpack is all he has.” There are picture teasers for the movie floating around on the web with the trio at a funeral, mental institution, on some sort of road trip and apparently back to its original setting in Sin City.

The main characters are being played once again by stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis. In 2009, the first Hangover movie was introduced to the world, and audiences from across the globe couldn’t help but be enamored by the harmlessly foolish troublemakers. Then in 2011 the sequel came out and became an even bigger hit than the first one, grossing over $254 million dollars. Both films banked in over $1 billion.

So what is it about the unlikely trio, irrational behavior and bad decisions that have viewers craving more and claiming eternal loyalty to them? Maybe we see ourselves through one of these characters or even envision them as our friends. There has to be a Phil, an Alan or a Stu in our lives. Or maybe audiences have been captivated by them because we wish we were them.

“I absolutely love ‘The Hangover’ and can’t wait for the third one. I fell in love with the Wolfpack and wish my life was as hectic and unpredictable as the characters. It’s a pretty good laugh. I will be at a theater opening night,” said New Rochelle resident Dave Bonafiglio.

However, not everyone is anticipating the end of the franchise. “Honestly, I don’t think a third episode to the movie is necessary,” says Iona College junior Elizabeth Ozoria. “They might not be in the same scenarios, but we all know that Alan is going to ‘roofie’ everyone and a series of unfortunate events are going to unfold. They need to stop now before it burns down and gets old.”

In a society where reality television is at its peak because of how “real” or scripted it is, “The Hangover” shouldn’t be seen as any less. We like to see others engage in activities that are considered taboo. As humans we like to watch bad things happen to others and feel relieved that it’s not happening to us.

“The Hangover” hands us the ability to be able to laugh and sometimes even cry at the same time, as well as wish we were experiencing such chaos or glad that we’re not. Whatever the case is, there is no doubt that the Wolfpack has become a household name and a triple threat. They have become part of the American culture and a form of undeniable laugh-out-loud entertainment.

Director Todd Phillips says that the film is “a fitting end to this three-part opera of mayhem and bad decisions.”

One thing is for sure, it is clear that they haven’t learned their lesson.

“The Hangover III” premieres on May 24, 2013.
