New ‘Star Wars’ Film Hits a Road Bump

Fans all over have been anxiously waiting for any tidbit of news on the upcoming “Star Wars” film. Whether it be hints from past cast members or announcements on any casting calls, the project is being watched closely.

Recently, fans got thrown a bone. However, it’s probably not the kind of report they were looking for.

Academy Award winner Michael Arndt was set to write the story and screenplay for “Star Wars: Episode VII” with high hopes from anyone who knows his work. Recent news, though, put a damper on that with Arndt suddenly leaving the project. Not much is known as to why he’s gone but attempts were made quickly to adjust the situation.

The new screenwriters set to tackle the project are Lawrence Kasdan and JJ Abrams. Kasdan is no stranger to this film universe, having been on the writing team for “Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back” and “Episdoe VI: Return of the Jedi.” He even had a hand in the most recent trio of “Star Wars” films. Abrams was already on board as director for the film but will now embark on a second role. Although Abrams had not worked with this franchise in the past, he is well known for his work on the reboot series of “Star Trek.”

“Sure it’s a little disappointing considering he’s written two already, but I don’t think it’s the end of the world,” said senior Brigitte Doughty.

“‘Star Wars’ is a big name and there is such high expectations for the next film that they’re not going to let this stop them.”

After hearing Abrams was now going to write as well as direct the film, Doughty said, “I love what he did with the ‘Star Trek’ films, there’s no way this is bad news for ‘Star Wars.’”

The franchise executives addressed fans’ concerns online.

“I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said on StarWars.com. “There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a Star Wars story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.J. of course is an incredible storyteller in his own right. Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point and we have an amazing filmmaking and design team in place already prepping for production.”

Other than this blip in the radar, matters seem to be going according to plan for ‘Episode VII.’ BBC recently reported that the project was putting out casting calls for a “street smart and strong orphaned girl in her late teens and a smart, capable man in his late teens or early 20s.” Of course these are ambiguous descriptions but probably only to keep some mystery about who the two characters may be.

‘Episode VII’ is set to be released for Dec. 15, 2015.
