Little things can make or break the latest One Direction album for fans

Every teenage girl’s five favorite boys are back with another hit album. One Direction released their third album, “Midnight Memories,” on Nov. 25.

Like always, One Direction’s repetitive and sappy songs will surely make you feel like you’re in middle school again.

For the most part, the boy band’s genre choices in “Midnight Memories” are similar to the songs on their first two albums. However, one thing listeners will pick up fairly quickly is that the band’s tone has a bit more of a rock vibe. One can hear this genre strongly in “Little Black Dress,” and “Midnight Memories.” The chorus of “Midnight Memories” resembles the tone and beat of “I Love Rock and Roll” by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. The rock vibe which appears in a few of One Direction’s songs is a nice touch and keeps the album fresh.

When it comes to overdone tracks, listeners should look no further than some of the band’s slower songs, especially “You & I.” Songs like this sound familiar, and they’re too slow and drawn out to be catchy. These slow songs remind one of “Little Things” from One Direction’s last album “Take Me Home.”

Unfortunately, many songs on the album lack that catchy quality One Direction fans love. Listeners cannot help but forget most of these songs right after they hear them. Many of the songs have the same beat and similar themes of relationships and girls. The songs feel black and white, which makes the songs unmemorable. An exception to this would be “Best Song Ever” which many can agree is a catchy song.

“Midnight Memories” isn’t all cons, however. One Direction fans will not be disappointed with some songs, which show off the band’s true potential. Such songs include “The Best Song Ever,” “Why Don’t We Go There” and “Alive.” These songs are great because they sound like the old One Direction, not too slow and not as much rock. The songs are corny in the usual upbeat exciting One Direction way, and true fans will not be disappointed.

All in all, One Direction’s new album “Midnight Memories” is an interesting album, however not fresh enough for new listeners to pick up and give it a try. True fans might as well pick it up, but shouldn’t be too surprised if they’re let down by it.
