New ‘Survivor’ season pits privileged against underdogs

The new season of “Survivor” premiered Sept. 26 on CBS. The season’s theme – David vs. Goliath – is a fight between the underdog and the favored.

The season began with a clear explanation of this season’s concept, when the idea of hard work was brought up. Host Jeff Probst made clear that David vs. Goliath is not a distinction of who is willing to put in the work, but instead who was fortunate enough to be born into privilege and who has had to overcome adversity to succeed.

In an interview with CBS, Probst revealed that the theme for this year’s “Survivor” came to the producers during casting. It just so happened that there were similar stories where people fell into these two categories.

“Survivor: David vs. Goliath” has been coined the most diverse season of “Survivor” yet. The cast is comprised of people from across the country – including Puerto Rico—who work in a variety of occupations, including a truck driver, waitress, physician and CEO. Mike White, the film writer for “School of Rock,” and WWE superstar John Hennigan are also among the castaways fighting for the million-dollar prize.

One castaway to keep an eye on is Pat – the personification of a David who is very open about how he had to work for everything that he has. On the Goliath tribe, there is Allison – a woman born into an upper middle-class family who is following in the footsteps of her physician parents. College was not an option for Pat whereas it was a given for Allison. The comparatively different backgrounds between these two contestants is what the season’s theme means to highlight.

The premiere episode included a challenge where the Goliath tribe could pick their two strongest members to compete against the David tribe’s two weakest members. However, the David tribe got to pick the obstacles the Goliath members would have to overcome. The 90-minute episode also included a ton of emotional moments, a wild immunity challenge in the pouring rain and an elimination that will leave viewers both shocked and heartbroken.

Probst has stated that the audience may be surprised by the way power shifts this season. While it seems obvious that the Goliaths have a physical advantage, every David has a little trick up his or her sleeve. Fans should not miss this modern take on the classic David vs. Goliath matchup. “Survivor” airs every Wednesday at 8 p.m. on CBS.
