Do you remember during 2020-2021 when almost every popular TikTok creator was starting a music career? Well, I sure do. And being completely honest, no artist’s work really stood out to me, except for one. Her name is Nessa Barrett. I started listening to her music in 2020, which was basically the start of her music career. My favorite thing about her is how vocal she is about mental health and grief in her lyrics.
Her music is considered alternative pop, dark pop, and pop rock. Her music dives deep into topics such as heartbreak, death, self-hatred and struggling with depression and borderline personality disorder. Her songs might not be easy to process for everyone, but they are so raw and honest.
Barrett has gone through many life obstacles such as losing her best friend to an accidental drug overdose and having to run away from home when she was 17 due to troubles in her household. She has become such a strong and inspiring artist, her fans become more and more impressed by how she’s able to take all of this pain and turn it into something so poetic and full of art.
On Spotify, her top 5 featured songs are: “P*RNSTAR”, die first”, “dying on the inside”, “Buffalo 66”, and “Stay with Me.” Barrett truly started to rise to fame once she released her sophomore album “AFTERCARE.” This album focused more on confidence and healing compared to her first album “young forever” that centered around having depression and experiencing intense heartbreak.
Last year I was able to see Barrett live at the Brooklyn Paramount theatre during her “AFTERCARE” tour. Her performances will forever stay with me as the concert was so fun and emotional. Just 2 weeks ago, Barrett just recently dropped her third EP, “Jesus Loves a Primadonna” featuring songs such as “Buffalo 66” and “Stay with Me”.
With this EP, fans have been able to get a gothic western sneak peek into Nessa’s third album that is currently in the works.
Personally, my favorite songs of hers are: “EDWARD SCISSORHANDS” (AFTERCARE), “talk to myself” (young forever), “lovebomb, (young forever)”, “GIVEN ENOUGH (AFTERCARE)” and “BREAKFAST IN BED (AFTERCARE DELUXE)”.
I am very intrigued in what tone and style her third album has in store for the fanbase. Barrett has grown such a loving community with her music and it’s very heartwarming to see fans of all different ages come together to support her.
