Last Wednesday, Oct. 29, saw an awesome activity hour, as Iona University’s very own staff-run rock band, seen photographed, had its fall concert out on the Murphy Green. The best part of it was that collaboration, including among students, was highly encouraged.
For instance, computer science students Eric Cabreja and John McCullagh joined forces to perform Sublime’s “Santeria”, which was quite entertaining.
“The fun vibe it has as well as the reggae style beat, which is something I don’t get to hear a lot of anymore in public performances,” said Cabreja. “Lastly, it is just a really fun song to play!”
Speaking of computer science, the role of lead guitarist, similar to last year, was assumed by Department Chair and professor, Dr. Lubomir Ivanov. Ivanov notably played the Eric Clapton blues song “Floating Bridge.”
For me (and for my colleagues), playing in the band is a fun, rewarding, yet challenging experience,” remarked Ivanov. “We all have our academic responsibilities as full-time faculty and department chairs, which leave little time for rehearsals. But when we do get together to jam, magic happens. It’s all about taking some time to spend with friends and make music together.”
The aforementioned magic included a tribute to the legendary Ozzy Osbourne, whose death still affects rock and metal fans alike. The band killed it with “Paranoid”, Black Sabbath’s signature tune. In addition to guitar playing, Ivanov also provided lead vocals.
By his side was Music Department Chair Dr. Adam Rosado, who added some nice saxophone playing.
“Despite all of us coming from various different academic disciplines, the band allows us to put on a nice show for our colleagues and students,” said Rosado.
Rosado’s passion shone through that day, especially when singing Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World.” Median and Strategic Communications Chair Mitchell Bard was an excellent drummer for this one.
“The Iona Rock Band concerts are a lot of fun and a great event for the community,” added Bard. It was great to see the faces of students, faculty members, staff members, and administrators stopping by to see the band rock out.”
Now how are songs such as these selected?
The members of the band said that they pick their songs just like any other rock band. That being said, Rosado added that he appreciated the opportunity this event gave him to learn new songs. For instance, their rendition of “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None The Richer was thanks to the input of backup singer Dr. Michelle Veyvoda. Veyvoda proudly took center stage for the band’s conclusion, “I Love Rock ‘N Roll” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Other tunes played included “Time” by Pink Floyd, “Losin’ My Religion” by R.E.M., “Back On The Chain Gang” by The Pretenders, and “Hey, Jude” by The Beatles.
If you missed this concert, be sure to return next Spring!
