Iona College men’s basketball head coach Tim Cluess has become a potential candidate for the head coaching vacancy at St. John’s, according to CBS College Basketball Insider Jon Rothstein.

The news of Cluess, 60,  possibly leaving Iona for the school in Queens comes two days after NBA Hall of Famer Chris Mullin stepped down from the position. According to the New York Post, St. John’s started talking to Cluess on Wednesday and talks have progressed.

Arizona State Head Coach Bobby Hurley is another target for the position at St. John’s. However, Hurley announced on Thursday that he wants to stay with the Sun Devils and looks to extend his contract.

This makes Cluess the leading candidate for the position. Cluess has tides to St. John’s, as he played for the Red Storm from 1979-81 and he had four siblings (three brothers and sister) play there.

Cluess’ coaching resume is well respected across the nation, compiling a 199-108 record and made six NCAA Tournament appearances during nine seasons at Iona.

St. John’s has reached the NCAA Tournament four times in the last 18 years. The Red Storm hasn’t won a tournament game since 2000.
