‘The Bodyguard’: When singing and acting collide
April 11, 2011
Acting is one thing. Singing is another. It’s hard enough to be successful in one of the two areas but it’s near impossible to be great in both. Or is it? With news coming out that the movie “The Bodyguard” is being remade, one can seriously start pondering over this question.
“The Bodyguard” came out in 1992 starring Kevin Costner as a strict, down-to-business bodyguard protecting a freedom loving singer, Whitney Houston. Love and near-death situations follow.
While the movie was a financial success and was one of the top grossing films of the year, its reviews weren’t so great. Currently, it holds a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was quoted by Entertainment Weekly to be “…an outrageous piece of saccharine kitsch.” Juxtapose to this, though, was it being nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Original Song. Its soundtrack was a smash as well with Houston’s vocal chords backing it up.
One has to keep in mind though, its singing was being honored, and not it’s acting.
So would it be strange to hear that Warner Bros. is planning to make a remake? Deadline.com broke the news not long ago and wrote, “The goal is to take a young female singer with global appeal and give her the platform that ‘The Bodyguard’ did Houston.”
However, the plot is bit different this time; the new bodyguard comes home from Iraq and takes the protection gig but runs into some difficulties when watching over the singer. The technology of today, such as Twitter, does anything but help make the job easier.
Rumors of who is going to play the two new stars have been swirling around ever since. However, most of the interest is around who’s going to be the in-need-of-protection singer. Buzz has been forming around Beyonce (who has already acted in a handful of movies like “Cadillac Records”), Jennifer Hudson (who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in “Dream Girls”), Christina Aguilera (who just starred in “Burlesque”), Katy Perr, and even Lady Gaga.
Rihanna was even said to be considered, but in an interview with OK! Magazine she rejected the role saying, “I hate it when singers do singing movies all the time because you can never look at them as anybody else. I want to play a character. My whole life is playing Rihanna, being a singer won’t be a stretch for me. I like challenges and being an actor is playing a role, being able to step into somebody else’s shoes, that’s the excitement.”
Does it go over well when the line between singing and acting gets crossed?
The answer isn’t a clear one but almost always it’s either a hit or miss. There’s never just a happy medium. Some examples are Gwyneth Paltrow in “Country Strong,” Kelly Clarkson in “From Justin to Kelly,” the whole cast of “Dream Girls” including Eddie Murphy; Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor in “Moulin Rouge,” Jennifer Lopez in “Selena,” and Miley Cyrus in “Hannah Montana The Movie,” the list goes on and on. Some of them were given the thumbs up while others were handed Razzies.
So, will “The Bodyguard” meet the standards of success? Its predecessor did in some aspects but not others. And because of that many are doubting how well this one will do. Some are even doubting that anyone could even try to match Whitney’s Houston’s amazing singing that was done for the film. Then again, the movie could prove to be a hit and at least rock either the singing or acting world. Maybe even both.
