How we get news

The point is, the media industry and how we get our news is changing rapidly. I wrote a few issues ago about the digital age and the use of social media. Whether it’s reading The Wall Street Journal on a tablet or watching a morning show on your phone. When taking the train to NYC, you can obviously see how different everyone is. In the mornings going to interning, I see people with their face in a newspaper or looking at their phone—or both, in my case.

I will sometimes be able to read the newspaper and scroll through the different news apps on my phone, or the easier way—in my opinion—is looking through Twitter or Facebook for news. I feel that it is good to get your news from multiple sources. Mostly everything online is hyperlinked. For instance, if there is a particular article you are reading about, usually there is a video that goes with it. I will sometimes watch the video because it allows me to process it differently rather than reading it. Seeing the videos in the stories is very convenient because I don’t always have time to sit down and turn on the TV.

As I’ve said in my other column, as much as I like social media and everything being digitized, I don’t like the strain that reading from a tablet or phone puts on your eyes. For me, after a while I will start to feel tired more easily.

It’s very rare that you hear people on the train talking to each other. I mean, it is pretty awkward to talk to people you don’t know, but I believe that years ago—when there were no electronic devices—there was probably more conversation going on.

Now, most people keep to themselves or they are talking on the phone the whole train ride home, which I find annoying. There are also “quiet cars” on the Metro North in which people can opt to sit without any noise.

I think most people my age are not reading newspapers, but I am particularly read one or two when I get the chance. My favorite ones are The New York Times and The New York Post. It has a classier feel to it. But, make no mistake, Twitter is my favorite way when trying to find out what is happening in the world.

Whatever works best for you, know that keeping up with today’s current events is very easy and there is most likely a certain way that appeals to you.
