Sept. 10 saw the Iona Women’s Soccer Team play away and beat Delaware State, 3-1.
The Gaels had an amazing first half, controlling most of the game and scoring two goals, with attacker Sofia Bigeni playing a primary factor in the final results. She scored a goal in the 37th and 42nd minutes.
Later in the game, the Gaels conceded a penalty in the box, allowing Delaware State to score on a penalty kick. Moving onto the second half, the Gaels scored their third goal of the game in the 65th minute. Zaheira Hegazi placed the ball perfectly into the back of the net with the assistance of Molly Marcus.
Returning to New Rochelle on Sept. 13 was the Iona Women’s Soccer team, who went up against Fairfield University and lost 3-0.
It was not a good day on the pitch for the Gaels as they struggled heavily to gain momentum and control throughout the game. Fairfield took a 2-0 lead early in the game. In the first 45 minutes, the Gaels only came up with a singular shot on target by Marissa Graziano.
However, defensively, the Gaels had their moments as Junior Savannah Rogers made a remarkable save early in the 5th minute. She also had a total of seven saves throughout the whole game, which was a personal record for her for a single game. To top it all off, it was a pretty intense game with both teams having a combined number of 19 fouls, and Iona received a singular yellow.
On Sept. 20, 2025, Iona women’s soccer gets back on the road as they face Merrimack College. The Gaels fell 4-1 to Merrimack. They fought until the end but couldn’t come out on top.
However, the Warriors stood their ground early, scoring in the ninth minute to lead 1-0. Then the Gaels tried to take action quickly, and they almost leveled the game in the 20th minute. Later on, Dolene Smith was given a lead pass, then she chipped a shot over the keeper, but it was ruled offside.
The Gaels had a quiet first half. Not until the second half did the Gaels start to put pressure and score in the 51st minute. Forward Dolene Smith scored a spectacular goal. But Merrimack was quick to answer in the 56th minute, giving them a 2-1 lead. Merrimack continued to threaten, giving up two more goals later on in the game. During the whole match, there were only 13 fouls; most players stayed on their feet.
