Iona soccer teams’ season in full swing

The two teams have scored a combined total of 26 goals, six for the men and twenty for the women so far.

The Iona men’s and women’s soccer teams continue their seasons, as both are now in the full swing of their schedules. 

 

The Iona men’s soccer team recorded their first win against a MAAC (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) opponent this season after shutting out Marist College 1-0 on Oct. 1 at Mazzella Field.  

 

While the men’s team improved their record to 2-3-1 on the year, the Iona women’s soccer team came up short against Marist College losing 2-1 on Oct. 1 on the road, moving their record to 6-3-3.  

 

The men’s team won against Marist College behind a shutout performance from Juan Alfaro Monge, his first shutout win of the season. Frederik Johnson Oee got the only goal of the game for the Gaels.  

 

The women’s team’s only goal of the game against Marist College came from Emily Drake, which was her second goal of the year.  

 

Following this win against Marist, the men’s team moves their record to 2-0-1 at home and 1-0 against MAAC teams. The men’s team have outscored their opponents at home four goals to two.  

 

The loss against Marist College moved the women’s teams record against MAAC opponents to 1-2.  

 

Both teams are led by many key players. Kedarjah Lewis leads the women’s soccer team in goals with four as well as tying Kate McNally and Samantha Hogan in assists with three apiece. Lewis also leads the team in points with eleven.  

 

Camil Azzam Ruiz and Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez lead the men’s soccer team in goals with two goals apiece. Ruiz and Fernandez also lead the team in points with five each.  

 

The Iona men’s soccer team is led by head coach James Hamilton who is in his seventh year after being named the seventh men’s soccer head coach.  

 

The women’s soccer team is led by head coach Todd Plourde who is in his fourth season. Plourde is the third winningest coach in the program’s history.  

 

The women’s soccer team finish their season with seven straight games against MAAC teams as the men’s soccer team finish their season with nine straight games against MAAC opponents. 

 

 The women’s team will be at home against Canisius College, Quinnipiac University and Siena College and on the road against Rider University, Manhattan College, Niagara University and Fairfield University.  

 

The women’s team beat Canisius College last year 1-0, as well as beating Quinnipiac University 1-0 and lost 2-0 to Siena College last season. They beat Rider University last season 2-0, lost to Manhattan College 1-0, beat Niagara University 1-0, and beat Fairfield University as well 2-0.  

 

The men’s soccer team will be at home facing off against Rider University, Manhattan College, Niagara University and Fairfield University. They will be on the road as they face Canisius College, Quinnipiac University, Siena College, Mount St. Mary’s College and Saint Peter’s University.  

 

The men’s team lost to Rider University last year 1-0, tied with Manhattan College 1-1, lost 1-0 to Niagara University and lost 2-0 to Fairfield University. They lost 2-0 to Canisius College last season, beat Quinnipiac University 3-1, beat Siena College 3-1 and lost to Saint Peter’s University 1-0.  

 

As both teams start to face off against MAAC teams they both look forward to the MAAC tournament. The 2022 MAAC Championship for the women’s soccer team starts with the first round on Oct. 30 and the championship game is Nov. 6.  

 

The 2022 MAAC Championship for the men’s soccer team starts with the first round on Nov. 6 and the championship game on Nov. 13.  

 

Last season the women’s team reached the quarterfinals, losing 2-0 to Siena, the second time Siena knocked them out of the tournament in two seasons. The men’s team failed to qualify for the MAAC tournament for the first time since 2016.
