Provost Dr. Darrell P. Wheeler has been named president of SUNY New Paltz, as announced in a campus-wide email sent by President Carey on May 3.

Over the past four years at Iona College, Dr. Wheeler served as provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs. He oversaw the launch of new academic programs in Nursing and Entrepreneurship and was instrumental in the establishment of the new School of Health Sciences in partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Wheeler also led the reaccreditation process with Middle States, which resulted in Iona having the maximum 10-year accreditation.

Enrollment has grown and student retention has increased as a result of Dr. Wheeler’s work. Additional accomplishments by Dr. Wheeler include introducing the Interactive Degree Audit, a tool that helps students keep on track to graduate. Additionally, Dr. Wheeler ensured that every student is assigned an advisor for their entire Iona career.

When the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in New Rochelle, Dr. Wheeler’s professional expertise was helpful for Iona to respond proactively and safely.

Tricia Mulligan, Ph.D., has agreed to serve as interim provost with Nadine Cosby, Ph.D. as assistant provost and Caitlin Grogan as office manager.

Dr. Wheeler’s last day at Iona will be June 30.
