Iona Athletics is continuing construction to expand the cardio and weight rooms in the west end of the Hynes Athletics Center.

The center is currently closed to prevent any violation of guidelines regarding the coronavirus pandemic. The construction is set to go on throughout the fall semester with hopes of finishing the project before social distancing guidelines are relaxed.

“The size of rooms will increase about 33 percent,” Senior Associate Athletics Director Brian Beyrer said via email. “On the second floor, where you previously found a hallway between Mulcahy Gymnasium and the cardio room, that area is now a part of the cardio room.”

The room is now set to reach from the windows facing Mazzella Field to the windows looking at the recreational gym, according to Beyrer. Down below, the weight room has been increased as well, with the hallway being removed to make room for the extra space.

Construction of the cardio and weight room expansion was planned before the COVID-19  pandemic, according to Beyrer. Expansion started in early August, right when classes began for students.

Director of Athletics Matthew Glovaski is looking forward to the new renovations.

We are very excited for the impact these renovations will have on our students and the Iona community,” Glovaski said via email. “The weight rooms and cardio room in Hynes West are an integral part of campus and we look forward to completing the expansion this fall.”
