Amanda Bynes’ on-again, off-again career

The actress Amanda Bynes is causing a bit of confusion in the past months regarding her acting career. Twitter has been the main powerhouse behind this confusion, specifically tweets from Bynes. In June the actress had tweeted that she had decided to retire from acting at the young age of 24. Yet in July, a change of mind made her tweet that she was going to ‘unretire.’ Then to add to the puzzle, Bynes deleted her Twitter account entirely without any explanation. So what exactly is the actress planning on doing?

One can not help but wonder if a failing film career is the reason. Despite her popularity and star power, many people will be surprised to find that Bynes has not even been in 10 movies her whole life. But they always say, “quality over quantity.”

Her filmography starts off with the comedy flick co-starring Frankie Muniz, “Big Fat Liar”, then moved on to more teenage roles with “What a Girl Wants”, “She’s the Man”, “Hairspray”, and “Sydney White.” Bynes’ only voice role was in the 2005 movie “Robots.”

While her acting never ranged into the adult or drama area, she still performed well in the films she starred in, giving the audience a comedic and entertaining way to see the trials of adolescent life, ranging from realistic scenarios, like dealing with mean girls like Sara Paxton, to unrealistic, like pretending to be your brother at school to play soccer while sharing a room with Channing Tatum.

Bynes is most remembered for acting during the glory days of Nickelodeon. She starred in the memorable “All That,” which earned her a chance at her own show “The Amanda Show,” where she, along with co-stars Drake Bell and Josh Peck, performed a number of comedic skits. Some might also remember her 2002 series, “What I Like About You,” co-starring Jennie Garth and only lasted four years.

Despite these successes, Bynes has not managed to catch another lead role in a TV series. But is that a good enough reason to quit acting? While her movies are few and her television spots are not so prominent, the actress is not what many would label ‘washed up.’ Bynes is only 24, and still holds enough popularity to be recognized nation-wide. So what led to the actress’ sudden act of retirement and unretirement?

The first tweet from Bynes said, “Being an actress isn’t as fun as it may seem. If I don’t love something anymore I stop doing it. I don’t love acting anymore so I’ve stopped doing it.” One can safely assume from this quote that it was not the movie business pushing her out, but that she was leaving it. Then just a month later the simple, “I’ve unretired” tweet came in without an explanation. Confused fans became even more dumbfounded when the Twitter account was deleted entirely with no other words from the actress.

Perhaps the recent opening of “Easy A,” starring Emma Stone, changed Bynes’ mind. In the film she plays Marianne, a Jesus-obsessed student who is determined to either give her idea of help, or run Stone’s character out of town when the rumor mill goes crazy over some unpleasant news. The movie gained immense praise and opened at number two on its box office weekend, right behind Ben Affleck’s “The Town.” So perhaps such success is what caused the change of heart but whatever the case maybe, be sure to expect to see Amanda Bynes again whether it be on the big screen or small.
