On Oct. 7, Dr. Dean E. Wilcox, a chemistry professor at Dartmouth College, came to Iona College as part of the Careers in Science at Iona (CSI) Program.

This program is a series of presentations hosted by professor Dr. Sunghee Lee and Dr. Jerome Levkov of the Chemistry Department at Iona.

Wilcox got his bachelors and masters degrees in chemistry from the University of California at Riverside and received his Ph.D. from MIT. He has taught chemistry at Dartmouth since 1984. “I like chemistry because it is in the middle,” he said.

He explained that the different types of chemistry vary widely and include many interesting topics.

Much of his presentation was about the research he conducts at Dartmouth College about bio-inorganic chemistry. He focused on the thermodynamics and how it is affected by bonds between proteins and metals. There have been five other presentations in the CSI Program, covering topics such as internship experiences, research opportunities, and potential careers in the science fields.

The speakers have included students, visiting professors, Iona professors, and alumni. They will continue throughout the semester. The next one is on Oct. 21 and the speaker will be Alexander Benitez.
