Are Disney stars cursed?

Britney, Lindsay, Miley…those house hold names have many things in common: Disney stars that have fallen off the Mickey Mouse train.

All three started out as wholesome teen queens with a bit of an edge but nonetheless, they were the stars of different Disney eras. Now, more than ever, we see young stars, especially Disney Channel stars, heading down the wrong paths.

Britney Spears was the Princess of Pop in the late 90s, early 2000s. She started out in the Mickey Mouse Club, a wholesome little girl, but once she became a teenager, you couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing her songs or turn on the TV without seeing her face. There was no way to escape the essence of Britney Spears. She was linked to Justin Timberlake and together, they were pop royalty. Spears was the idol little girls looked up too; she was put on a high pedestal, possibly a bit too high.

In 2008, all of the attention on her personal life caught up with her. She had incidents with the paparazzi, scrutiny from the media and public about her mothering skills, and pressure to put out a new album. She shaved her head during a rampage and ended up in the hospital more than once. Spears has said in many interviews since then that the constant spotlight on her since her teenage years is what caused her breakdown. She could not handle the media focus and attention and it nearly broke her.

Since then, Spears has reclaimed her title of Princess of Pop with one hit album, “Circus,” a sold out tour to accompany the album, and a new album on the way, “Female Fatale.” Britney Spears has made a comeback for herself. The same can not be said for her fellow Disney teen queens.

Lindsay Lohan is another story; a tragic one. She started off in big Blockbuster hits like “The Parent Trap,” “Freaky Friday,” and “Mean Girls,” but something happened along the way. She lost track of herself and the world around her. Lohan had a string of bad movies such as “Georgia Rule” and “Herbie Fully Loaded,” pair that with her nights out clubbing and drinking, her multiple DUIs and you have yourself a train wreck. Her bickering parents didn’t help either, always flapping their mouth off to the press.

The public is now watching Lohan go in and out of rehab and jail for violating her probation and also for allegedly stealing an expensive necklace. When is Lindsay going to get the hint that she has a problem?

Taking the throne away from Spears and Lohan as Disney’s prime train wreck in the making is Miley Cyrus. She hit it big in 2006 with her debut as Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel and began to play concerts as her alter ego. Eventually Cyrus started writing her own music and became her own musician. She was scandal free for a little while and things were looking up. That is until she was caught in a few naughty picture scandals, an odd, revealing photo-shoot in Vanity Fair, a feud with fellow Disney stars Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez, and pole dancing on the Teen Choice Awards.

Cyrus was trying to shed her Hannah Montana image in the wrong way but shed she did. Hannah Montana went off the air a few months ago and now Cyrus is spreading her wings in scandalous music videos and wearing revealing dresses on the red carpet. No one knows if Cyrus will fully hop aboard the Disney crazy train, but it seems to be heading in that direction. She has even stated that Britney Spears is her role model for her so maybe it’s inevitable that Cyrus ends up like Britney.

Another reigning Disney star is Demi Lovato. She came on right as Cyrus was establishing herself as queen bee. Lovato always seemed pretty normal and wholesome, a clear head on her shoulders but as usual it didn’t last for long. She had a physical incident with a backup dancer after a concert in South America with her touring mates and ex boyfriend, Joe Jonas’ band The Jonas Brothers. Lovato said that fight was the final straw and checked herself into rehab for an eating disorder and self mutilation. Lovato said that this is something she’s been dealing with for a while and knew she had to get help. She was released earlier this month and is reported to be doing better.

At least this Disney star had a clear head on her shoulders to get help.

One thing that stands out in all of these Disney stories is the fact that these girls have become so famous at such a young age. Their private lives are out in the open for everyone to criticize and observe. Their parents may start off as good parents, trying to protect their child but in the end, the parents of Spears, Lohan, and Cyrus have exposed their daughters to a life they truly weren’t ready for. The parents try to cut a piece of fame for themselves and that has been true with Michael Lohan and Billy Ray Cyrus, both fathers frequently talking to the press about their famous offspring.

So is Disney really cursed? Is every teen queen that reigns in the House of Mouse destined for disaster? It’s certainly been true in the past. Only time will tell if the pattern will continue.
