Kriss collects five RBIs in win over Hartford University

After winning their first MAAC series of the season against Siena, the Iona baseball team travelled to Newark, N.J., to take on NJIT.

Just two innings into the game, the Gaels found themselves down 10-2 and went on to lose 12-6. Iona’s offense was powered mainly from freshman JT Torres, who went 3-3 at the plate, and junior Eric Capowski, who went 2-3.

Iona then returned to league action against Niagara, where the Gaels were able to split a doubleheader before losing the series finale.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Iona was down 2-1 going into the eighth inning before a four run inning was able to lift the Gaels to victory.

Iona got their runs off a two-run single from senior Nick Rossetti and a two-run double by junior Michael Chiaravalloti for the win.

In the second game, Iona fell 4-2 thanks to a three run sixth inning. Iona also lost the final game of the series by a 7-5 score line.

The Gaels then went to the Bronx to take on Fordham at Houlihan Park. Within the first three innings, Fordham was up 5-0 and never gave up the lead, despite the Gaels cutting the lead to two runs twice.

Iona got five hits combined from freshman Bobby Vitulano and Torres at the top of the batting order, and two RBI’s from junior Chris Burke in the loss.

The Gaels continued their non-league road trip against Monmouth in another doubleheader.

In both games of the doubleheader, Iona was only able to record eight hits as they were outscored 20-2 in the sweep.

However, Iona was able to respond in a huge way in its next non-league game against the University of Hartford.

In that game, Iona came out firing early and often in a 16-6 win.

Every starter on the Gaels recorded at least one hit, and the offense was spearheaded by Burke, who went 4-6 with a home ru;, sophomore Matthew Kriss, who recorded a career high five RBI’s; Chiaravalloti, who went 2-4 with three runs scored; and junior James Beck, who scored two runs on two hits.

Senior Brian Callahan was able to record his third win of the season out of relief.

In Iona’s final non-league game, they travelled to Staten Island to face Wagner. Early on, Iona was up 2-0 thanks to a Rossetti homerun, but a six run sixth inning did in the Gaels.

After playing five straight non-league games, the Gaels returned to league action against Saint Peters.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Gaels lost 6-3 before prevailing with a 13-1 thrashing in the nightcap.

In that second game, Iona was powered by Burke, who went 4-4 with his team leading eighth homer of the season, Beck, who was able to go 3-4 and hit a three run homer, and Chiaravalloti, who extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Following this series with Saint Peters, Iona will face Marist and Fairfield in league games before closing out their season against Manhattan in New Rochelle on May 21 and 22.

The three game set will close out the season for the Gaels and will also be the first and only time Iona plays its local rival Manhattan College.
