Valentine’s Day movies to check out this month

We all know the classic Valentine’s Day movies: “The Notebook,” “The Last Song” and “A Walk to Remember” are usually the go-to for couples looking for a cozy night in or friends bingeing the rom-coms to celebrate the day of love. Believe it or not, however, it’s possible to get tired of Nicholas Sparks’ greatest hits. Looking for something a little different this Valentine’s Day? Look no further! We’ve got your older classic romantic comedies, new Netflix specials and even a few quirky action-packed flicks for those who need a little more in the movies!

1. “Definitely, Maybe”

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher and Elizabeth Banks

Where to watch: Netflix

If you haven’t seen “Definitely, Maybe,” you’ve definitely heard about it (or a quote from it)! A single father tells his daughter about his love life when she asks why he’s not with her mom anymore. Along the way, discoveries are made, and he may just get another shot at love. Ryan Reynolds hanging out with a cute kid while systematically failing epically in romance? What could be better? On top of that, the movie is essentially a mystery. Who will Reynolds end up with? (Think “How I Met Your Mother,” but, you know, good).

2. “Set It Up”

Starring: Glen Powell and Zoey Deutch

Where to watch: Netflix

This is one of many romantic comedies Netflix dished out in 2018. Two overworked assistants get their bosses together in order to get more time off. When everything falls apart, the matchmakers get a taste of their own medicine. Both Powell and Deutch have shot to stardom in the last few years. Seeing them side by side is everything you could want! While it does have a contrived “will they, won’t they” plot, the acting and witty humor more than make up for the clichés. In fact, add this movie to your Netflix list year-round, not just for Valentine’s Day!

3. “When We First Met”

Starring: Alexandra Daddario, Adam Devine and Shelley Hennig

Where to watch: Netflix

Funny, fast-paced and heartwarming, this romantic comedy has it all. A man goes back in time to try to end up with the love of his life when it is revealed she’s getting married to another man. With multiple possible outcomes, will he ever get it right? Devine owns the ‘down-on-his-luck-friend-zoned-best-friend’ trope and gives it a refreshing dose of comedy. In addition, not everything is as it seems with this movie; you may be pleasantly surprised!

4. “To All the Boys I Loved Before”

Starring: Lana Condor and Noah Centineo

Where to watch: Netflix

This movie shot to stardom over the summer when Twitter began raving about the adorable high school romance portrayed in the film. A girl writes a love letter each time she’s trying to get over a crush. However, her younger sister goes behind her back and mails the letters out. Not only does the movie have beautiful Wes Anderson-inspired shots, the soundtrack is incredible. If you’re not into first-love romance movies, at least give it a shot for the music!

5. “Love and Honor”

Starring: Liam Hemsworth and Teresa Palmer

Where to watch: Netflix

Now this movie you may not have heard of. Set during the Vietnam War, a soldier is on leave when he meets an anti-war protestor and they fall in love. They must find a way to overcome their differences as they’re surrounded by propaganda, secrets and protests if they want to make it together. This movie has a little something for everyone: love, action and angst galore!

6. “Mr. Right”

Starring: Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell

Where to watch: Amazon Prime, YouTube

This quirky romance is both a rom-com and action movie rolled into one! A woman falls for a guy she just met, who just happens to be an ex-hitman. I know, sounds like a weird plot, right? But it works! This movie shines with Kendrick and Rockwell’s witty humor and odd commentary. Definitely a must-see!

7. “The Proposal”

Starring: Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds

Where to watch: Amazon Prime, YouTube

Who doesn’t love “The Proposal?” An aspiring publisher is blackmailed by his boss into a whirlwind fake romance to keep his boss’ Canadian visa from expiring. Hijinks ensue. With iconic scenes like the campfire chant, this is a classic. Also, Betty White is in it! Funny but also heartfelt, “The Proposal” is one you will never get sick of.
