Lacrosse wins home opener in thriller

The Iona College lacrosse team took their first home-opener win after the long battle over Sacred Heart University on Wednesday afternoon, when senior Casey Scully scored with 2:04 remaining in the fifth overtime.

Sophmore Brenna Lade made the first goal of the season home opener, giving Iona a 1-0 lead.

Junior Brittney Mabus led Iona with three goals on the afternoon, as well as Scully and Lade. Freshman Meghan Testoni and sophomore Nina Veneziale each finished with two goals.

With 1:33 remaining in the half junior Kylie Gregory tied the game with a goal leaving the score at 4-4. Shelby Vaccaro scored with 13 seconds remaining giving the lead back to the Pioneers.

Mabus found senior Emily Taddei for a goal which gave Iona back their lead. The Gaels added three more goals to take a 9-8 lead.

Rochler found Pluijmakers with 4:20 left in the game to force the overtime.

Scully scored in the first overtime period with three seconds remaining to give the Gaels a 10-9 lead over the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart tied the game again forcing a sudden death overtime with 39 seconds remaining. Taylor Babin found Pepe inside the Iona zone to tie the game once again.

Scully scored the winning point by a pass from Mabus in the last few minutes.

After a big game against the Sacred Heart Pioneers, Iona fell short to La Salle after a 10-7 loss.

Lade led the Gaels with three goals and Gregory scored two. Scully scored once and had one assist, while Lade scored three goals on the afternoon.

Junior Nancy Ibrahim made 13 saves against the Explorers.

The Iona College lacrosse team then took on the Long Island Blackbirds with the 17-7 win on Feb. 28.

Veneziale led the Gaels with six points and three assists and Gregory had five points and one assist. Lade, Scully and Taddei all scored three points against the Blackbirds.
