Lacrosse picks up two straight

The Iona College lacrosse team played Niagara on Saturday afternoon after a big win by the Gaels. Junior Kylie Gregory set new records finishing the game with seven points. Junior Brittney Mabus also finished the day up with six points, including three assists.

Senior Casey Scully scored four points, while Freshman Meghan Testoni scored two goals against the Purple Eagles. Sophomores Angela Grous and Brenna Lade tallied once. Sophomore goalie Maria Ortiz made 11 saves on the afternoon.

Niagara’s Emily French led her team with two points, and goalie Kaitlin Sorgi made 10 saves.

Iona’s first goal of the day came from Gregory, and 45 seconds later Scully scored from a great pass from Mabus, giving the Gaels a 2-0 lead. Iona kept their lead alive by scoring five consecutive times making the score 7-1. Gregory completed a hat trick and gave Scully and Mabus two goals each.

The Gaels finished the half with a 9-3 lead. In the second half, Lade scored early with another goal giving Iona a 10-3 lead.

Iona continued to score, which made it hard for the Purple Eagles to come back as the Gaels defeated Niagara 16-7.

Iona then faced Marist College on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Scully scored five goals, tying her career high as the Gaels took the victory, 11-3.

Testoni scored two goals, while Mabus added two assists and Gregory finished the game with a goal and an assist. Lade, senior Emily Taddei and freshman Olivia McCarthy each scored for Iona.

Goaltender Ortiz made 12 saves against Marist, winning her sixth game of the season.

Scully, Gregory and Testoni scored for Iona in the first half of the game. Marist scored, but Scully then tallied again, completing her hat trick and giving her team a 6-1 lead.

The Gaels didn’t score for 30 minutes of the second half until at the 9:28 mark Taddei scored. McCarthy scored again, while with one second left in the game Scully scored her fifth goal, giving Iona their second conference win.
