Coming back from a successful training trip in Florida last week, the Iona men’s swimming and diving team lost in their first meet back to Fordham 134-76.

“I think that we still have a lot to prove this year,” said junior Chris Giovine. “Most of the team was really tired at Fordham because we just got back from Florida and went straight in to classes and more practices with no days off.”

Despite having little rest, the Gaels still had solid performances all around, as well as three first place finishes from junior Justin Grigull in the 500 free, senior Chris Yacobacci in the 100 breast and the 200 free relay with senior Joseph De Leone, juniors Lee Stiles, Ryan Bacci and freshman Scott Martin.

Grigull also placed second in the 1,000 free, and another second in the 200- medley relay with Yacobacci, senior Michael Wu and freshman Vincent DiNapoli.

Other top swims came from Giovine in the 100 breast, where he finished third, and Yacobacci who finished third in the 200 IM.

The Gaels will have the opportunity to pick up some wins in conference competition.

“I’m really excited for the next three meets.” said Giovine. “They are all meets we should win, even though they will definitely be a challenge, and at MAACs we can show some of these teams that we have improved.”

The men will compete in a MAAC meet at their home pool against Saint Peter’s next week.
