Mean Girls…the musical?

Let’s be honest, who doesn’t quote “Mean Girls” on a daily basis? It just seems to fit every situation.

If you’ve ever uttered the words, “She doesn’t even go here!” or “You go, Glen Coco!,” then you just may be thrilled to hear that the beloved film may be turned into a musical.

On the SAG Awards red carpet, creator Tina Fey said, “I’m trying to develop it with my husband, who does all the music for 30 Rock and I think Paramount’s onboard.”

Millions of fans took to Twitter to express their joy in the news. The consensus was that this is something that the world needs, and it has to happen as soon as possible.

“Mean Girls” will not be the first popular movie to be turned into a musical. In 2007, “Legally Blonde” was turned into a Broadway musical, and in 2006, “The Color Purple” made its debut on stage with the help of Oprah Winfrey. Recently, Broadway saw “Ghost the Musical” based on the 1990 hit starring Patrick Swayze. Many of these musicals are no longer on Broadway, but that’s not to say they weren’t good.

Many are curious about what changes would be made and who, if anyone, could fill the spots of the actors we have grown to love and adore. Tina Fey has hinted at the fact that she would want Mariah Carey to play Amy Poehler’s part in the musical. While Carey definitely has the voice for Broadway, it is difficult to imagine her in a pink tracksuit.

It is still fairly early in the process as Tina Fey didn’t officially say that a Mean Girls musical was definitely going to happen, but it is never too early to start marking off-days on your calendar. So, will there be a “Jingle Bell Rock” musical number? Will they ever be able to find a Regina George who can be as loathed in her literal mean girl role as she is loved like Rachel McAdams pre-Notebook? And more importantly, where can I audition for the role Gretchen Weiners (I, too, have hair that is full of secrets)?

Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, if Tina Fey is attached to it, it is sure to be great.
