Sitting Down with Subb-an

Frank Dizenzo Contributing Writer

Ashique Subhan, also known as Subb-an, is a new DJ to the scene. Only 24 years old, he has worked hard since his teenage years to get where he is today. He is one of Britain’s most exciting new acts in these recent years. In 2011, Subb-an won DJ Magazines “Best Breakthrough DJ.”

Subb-an also founded an underground clubbing institution in 2005 called Below.

He recently played in Australia, China, Tokyo and is set to play in the United States in March. Although with Subb-an’s busy schedule, The Ionian was able to catch up with him and ask some questions about his life, career and his current tour.

When did you first discover your love for music?

Around the age of six or seven. I used to love listening to tapes whilst playing with toy cars. I used to pretend the music was coming from the cars.

With that passion for music, what made you play this genre or type of music and what do you consider your style of music?

My style has taken years to form and develop. I’ve discovered so much different music over the last 10 years, which has all had an influence in some way or another. Right now I love playing records with energy but that are intricate and interesting in production. It’s got to make people move but not be too heavy duty to scare.

Where did the name Subb-an come from and what’s the meaning behind it?

It’s my surname, just spelt slightly different. My name is Ashique Subhan.

Currently, you are on your tour for 2013 and you just played a show in Sydney; what are some of the highlights from that show?

Show was crazy. Main highlight was the crowd; they had heaps of energy and reacted to all the records as I wanted. I had been waiting all week to play some the music I had selected and it went off, thank you Sydney.

On your current tour, what would you consider the best venue that you have played at so far?

Hmmm, has to be the event in Lima, check it right here: http://vimeo.com/58341285

What kind of top DJ’s have you played with or will you be playing with on your tour?

Playing with Lazarus on most shows, which is great. Off the top of my head I’m not really sure who else is booked for the dates. I think there will be some shows along side Seth Troxler. We have The Martinez Brothers booked for our One Records showcase at Fabric. I think Art Department and Jamie Jones on a few. I play along side Sven, Hawtin and Dice at Timewarp in Brussels.

How does it feel to play along side such top name DJ’s or even know other such creative and talented people?

It’s great and it’s always fun. Great to see what people are playing and hear anything funny that’s been going on.

What is this biggest thing you are looking forward to on the rest of your tour?

Just playing more amazing venues and seeing more amazing crowds.

Subb-an “Rain” will be out on Visionquest.
