‘Catching Fire’ trailer sets fans ablaze

“The Hunger Games” series written by Suzanne Collins is a sensation that has been likened to the encompassing nature of the “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” franchises. When the first novel was released in 2008, it quickly became a hit with audiences who went out and eagerly bought the second novel in the trilogy, “Catching Fire,” in 2009.

With the dystopian science fiction genre gaining in popularity, movies based on the series were sure to follow. “The Hunger Games,” under the direction of Gary Ross, was released in 2012.

Lionsgate reeled in over 690 million dollars and accumulated more fans. These fans have been anxiously waiting for a sneak peek at the second movie in the trilogy, wondering the fate of the fiery protagonist Katniss Everdeen.

At the MTV Movie Awards on April 14, a two-minute teaser trailer was finally released for the sequel “Catching Fire” so that the public could gawk, cheer or potentially throw an insult at the new director of the film, Francis Lawrence.

Sophomore Randa Kriss said, “I am quite disappointed with the trailer. I had high hopes for the new director, but I feel he is misleading people [as to] what the book was actually about.”

With such criticism also comes some hopefulness. Many movie websites are commenting on the addition of Phillip Seymour Hoffman as one of the head gamemakers. They are optimistic that his presence will bolster the already successful franchise with even more star power.

The Academy Award winning actor joins the cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks, among others. The cast includes Grammy award winner Lenny Kravitz as Cinna.

The trailer highlights many of the events that happen towards the beginning of “Catching Fire.” Katniss and Peeta have just arrived home from the 74th Hunger Games. As dual victors, they begin their traveling around the districts as a sort of victory lap. However, in many of the districts, the tour is met by chaos.

The trailer chooses to focus on President Snow, played by Donald Sutherland, and Hoffman’s character talking about the symbol of revolution that is Katniss. This is reminiscent of the first movie in which the perspective of the gamemakers, as well as the tributes, was explored.

The trailer also chooses to depict one scene that fans were highly anticipating: the kiss between Katniss and Gale.

Sophomore Omoakhe Tisor says, “I can’t believe they showed [the kiss] in the trailer. I was so excited! I want to see it now.”

Whether it is to see the kiss, the bloodshed or just to make sure the director did not mess up, people have their own reasons for wanting to see “Catching Fire.” They will all have their chance on Nov. 22 when we will find out if the odds will be ever in Katniss’ favor.
